Between Rob English and Fair Wheel bikes we’ve seen some pretty amazing custom builds. Now, they’ve thrown Artist Geoff Mcfetridge into the mix to create this striking townie which leads a double life as a CX bike as well. As usual, there are a number of custom touches that result in an extremely clean build. Between the modified shifter set up, hidden wires and extra junction boxes, and eye catching paint, this bike should turn some heads…

From the outset the bike was always meant to double as both a townie and a CX bike which is accomplished by a change of tires and fenders. In order to build a frame that was belt drive compatible without a break in the tubing the frame uses an elevated chainstay design with a Niner EBB to allow for belt adjustment.

Tapping renowned LA based artist Geoff Mcfetridge for the hand painted finish which plays off his unique, illustrative style.

In order to make the front end as clean as possible, the steerer tube is integrated into the stem and all headset adjustments are made at the crown of the fork. The stem also acts as a home for the second junction box so that both shifters could shift the Alfine Di2 rear hub. Up front the fork makes use of a Tune Dc15 thru axle while the rear is bolt on for the Alfine hub. Rather than run the Shimano R785 brakes, Fair Wheel switched them out with new XTR calipers and Freeza rotors.

All wires and hoses are run internally with the rear through the top tube and seat stay.

  • English, frame, fork, stem
  • Enve 3.4 Disc clinchers with DT240 front and Alfine Di2 rear hub, Sapim CxRay spokes.

I love elevated stays, impractical and heavy but so very pretty.

Another gorgeous build from Rob English and Fair Wheel Bikes. Here’s hoping Rob continues to heal from his crash.

Really cool. Not my particular style, but awesome craftsmanship.

I love his clean, minimalist design. I wish he would evolve some of that into different materials, just to see where that would take him.

No need for frame break for belt with elevated stays. Nice!

Why, how pretty it would be if the non-drive side had a standard chain stay. Probably less flexy too.

Andy, it would only be less flexy in one direction…better the bike be similar on both sides, or at least very close. I wouldn’t want that flex on a regular road bike but it would have its benefits on choppy cross courses. Ideally though, the concept works much better(no idea why only a few do this) for fat bikes to solve the Q Factor problems

Very nice, never considered that different disc callipers and lever could be swapped around. So the XTR are mountain bike spec would they not have different volumetric fluid requirements than road callipers? What about using a 4 pot calliper with road levers, that would be very useful on the front of a touring bike riding loaded in the wet. Something like a Saint calliper.

Is there anybody on here that has done this hack, maybe BR can do a trial or just list the volumetric requirements for each calliper so people can chop and change as they see fit?

We clearly have very different opinions of what classifies as a townie.

fergus: The volume doesn’t really matter. We’ve been doing XT/XTR/Saint/Ultegra/DuraAce swapping for a while now. Add more oil. Done.

As a fan of elevated chainstays: https://flic.kr/p/6H6pE5, I approve! Such a clean build with really great paint work. I keep scrolling back up to look at the pictures. Great work on all fronts!

I would like the bike more if it didn’t have a Clavicula crank. It takes away from the beauty of the frame build and intended purpose.

Like I say in my shop “Just ’cause you CAN do it, don’t mean ya SHOULD.” In this case, it’s the Clavicula.
