Given the fact that Pedro’s NA is based in Boston, MA it’s impressive they even made it to Frostbike given the huge amounts of snow piling up, let alone with quite a few new surprises. Starting with hand tools, Pedro’s is jumping into pliers with the new Needle Nose and Diagonal cutters. Both tools feature self opening jaws that are designed for bike related tasks, especially the needle nose plies which feature notches for crimping, gripping, and cutting. Forged and heat treated with dual density grips, the 6″ long tools each sell for $26.

Another set of pliers is found with the new Quick Link Pliers meant to, well, open and close quick links. Not exactly a new concept, but the Quick Link Pliers will sell for just $15 and are an extremely useful tool to have around the shop. There’s plenty more Pedro’s yellow after the break including some prototypes and bike care products…

Every mechanic has had to go out back and break down bike boxes at some point in their career. The new Pedro’s Utility knife is designed to make that task a little easier while fitting a little better in your pocket or clipped to your belt. Using standard replaceable razor blades, the folding utility blade locks into place and combined aluminum and stainless steel for a light, durable tool that sells for $18. If you’re still using the plastic discs from Shimano to tighten your Hollowtech II crank preload bolts it’s time to upgrade. The Pedro’s Crank Adjusting Cap Driver makes the task a little easier and allows for better control over the torque applied. Equipped with a dual density handle, the tool sells for $14.

Technically still in development, Pedro’s is working on a new dual sized spoke wrench. The key to the design is the ergonomic handle which is flippable to get proper ergonomics on both sides of the spoke wrench.

Along with the spoke wrench, Pedro’s will have a few other new products this Fall including preset torque wrenches and THE Hammer.

Pedro’s is also working on new Apprentice and Pro chain tools to address the needs of various 11 speed drivetrains. Pricing on the new Pro tool is TBD, but expect the 11 speed compatible Apprentice to come in around $45.

The big news on the cleaner and degreaser side of Pedro’s is the move to all new formulas that are completely solvent free and have no VOC (Volitile Organic Compounds). According to Pedro’s it’s very expensive and difficult to produce chemical products for bicycles, but it’s even harder to make products that work well and aren’t terrible for you or the environment. Because of this, Pedro’s is very proud of their new potions that use advanced surfactants instead of solvents to remove dirt and oils and rinse completely clean with water. In development for three years with another year of solid testing, Pedro’s is releasing their new Pig Juice and Degreaser 13, both of which will be shipping in April.

Designed for their Chainpig chain cleaner, Pig Juice is a fragrance free, biodegradable, dye free, solvent free, plant derived cleaner that will leave your chain sparkling. Sold in either 40z or 160z bottles, Pig Juice will retail for $8 or $11. Degreaser 13 is a similar product but meant for other drivetrain components and benefits from light scrubbing and rinsing. Available in 4, 16oz, and 1 gallon sizes Degreaser 13 will sell for $9.50, $14, or $65. Green Fiz has also undergone the zero-VOC next generation treatment, and is the perfect cleaner for the entire bike. Available in standard concentration in multiple sizes for $10-15, Green Fizz is also available in the new 16x concentrated version in 4oz ($12) or 16oz ($18.50) sizes.

I want that hammer, though a deadblow version would make me even happier.

While that shimano hollowtech tool is nice; I just superglued a small bolt with an Allen head into the hole. Now I can use a torque wrench to tighten it or use a wrench to break free a stuck one.

I love the Pedros is the obvious leader in eco-friendly bike stuffs. Part of cycling’s appeal is that its light on the environment. Its too bad that more companies don’t even come close to following suit. They may make one or two “cleaner” products but they don’t want to go all in or even half in. I’ve never done a friction test on their lubes but through using tons of different cleaners while working at different shops, Pedros works as well as anything else without being nearly as harmful. Great to see that they’re making even more products available.

why would you use a torque wrench? isn’t it just a compression plug like on a headset

MarkV

Jason…..my thoughts exactly and for many that thread in easy LESS IS MORE! Can’t tell you how many I find cranked down and the two crankarm bolts medium tight?!?!

Are all tools not available until the fall? Or anything coming to us sooner than that?

Jason & MarkV, you try explaining to a customer why you stripped their Ti & Carbon stem, or snapped the integrated seatpost collar on their vintage Merckx…proper thread prep and torque wrenches are a must.

Bolts should be tightened to the manufacturer’s torque spec – no more, no less. In the absence of those the Barnett’s specs are fantastic guidelines.

Jay, Pedro's Product Manager

Michael, the Utility Knife, Diagonal Cutter Pliers, Needle Nose Pliers, Quick Link Pliers, Crank Adjusting Cap Driver, and new Shimano BB Wrenches (not shown), should start arriving at distributors in May. New bike care is also more like April/May.

Jason and MarkV, If you are talking about the Crank Adjusting Cap Driver, it is not a torque wrench. The screwdriver handle’s small diameter simply limits the leverage that can be applied. Certainly some mechanics could apply more torque than the spec but are less likely to do so accidentally.

there is a reason shimano doesn’t make a tool for hallowtech that attaches to a torque wrench or any wrench, that cap is meant to be snug… “finger tight” not tightened with a lever of any sort…. the Pedros tool is perfect.

The only green thing Pedro’s is chasing is my dollars. Their stuff is grossly overpriced.

Thanks for the news.

Tip: If in doubt about when to use a comma, don’t use one!

@Scott, cool your jets. They were questioning the use of a torque wrench on an HT2 preload bolt.

Torque wrenches are for inexperienced people.

it could be an optical illusion, but it looks like the diagonal cutters are flush-cut. can Pedros confirm?
ive always gone with utility knives that store extra blades in the handle and have a quick-change feature.

Shimano makes a nice metal tool for the hollow tech crank. It is like a big wing nut. Works way better than the plastic thing. And, for some reason, you can put an Allen wrench into it. Which means you could use the correct adapters and hook it to the torque wrench. I am not sure why you would want to, but if over torquing stuff is your thing, you sure can do it.

@Jeff – What you are describing sounds both incredibly stupid, and impossible.

Well… There is a torque listed for it… But I’m surprised anyone has a 1.5Nm torque wrench 😀

The folly of buying standard tools with a bike tool maker’s name. I have a folding utility knife that is exactly like the one shown by Pedros. Same construction and features but labeled “Husky” and was $8 at Home Depot.

Jay, Pedro's Product Manager

Greg, Re flush cut, it is just an illusion. The cutting edges are symmetrical ground.

@Dave B, realistically, tools like that are more for shops than for consumers – as in, the shop needs new side cutters but you can’t get the owner to make a trip to home depot to pick them up. So now you just drop them on the next QBP order and you get your tools and the owner gets credit from qbp.

@ Dave B: I have a couple packs of 3 folding razor knives that Lowes gave away around Father’s Day. Kobalt Brand.

I am wondering if the Pig Juice and/or the Degreaser can be used in a commercial kitchen.
