Purely Custom XY Tool bike fitter stack and reach saddle position aid

If you’ve ever had a professional bike fit done, some of the most important numbers are your saddle’s relation to your handlebars and your bottom bracket. But getting those numbers back where you want them after changing parts, especially your saddle, or matching up your “B” bike to your “A” bike can be a bit tough. We’ve tried doing it with levels, plumb lines and tape measures, and it’s cumbersome to say the least.

Now, Purely Custom has introduced their new XY Tool, which should make all of that an absolute breeze. Using metal slides with etched measurements and built-in bubble levels, the device makes it super easy to get your saddle position dialed and figure out what stem length you need. Adapters help measure stack and reach, too. At $295, it’s aimed at the professional, but man do we want one…

Purely Custom makes a number of other tools for the bike fitter, too. And they’re cool because they use lasers!

A drywall square, a measuring tape, and some masking tape on the floor to keep everything parallel does a bang-up job for under $30 for the home garage bike setup. Not pro-level for sure though.

looks nice. for a cheap home use version, you can glue a small bubble level to each arm of an adjustable 48″ T-square. not as nice as the Purely Custom tool but it’ll get you there for around $30.

Spot on Dude and a little bit of Wrench Science bike fit to help exposes the unscrupulous retailers that sell folk the wrong size because it what they have hanging on the hook. I crusade against such people and help all I can for free.

What is new about this? I’ve had one of these for several years now. Oh, and for you DIY types, I tried DIY, and this is much easier to use, and more accurate.

I bought the original. It looks very similar to this “updated” tool. I thought it was useless since the etched measurement numbers didn’t seem to coincide with anything. I emailed them a couple of times trying to get some answers as to why but no response so I ended up finding the tool useless and sent back to purchase a BG XY tool, which I find much more useful.

Fiz, why do the numbers have to coincide with something? As long as you have your zero point and it’s consistent, it shouldn’t matter what the numbers mean.

Can this be used on the driveside, or is it NDS only? I see no mention that it can be flip-flopped to work with cranks that have their bolt on the driveside only (ie Sworks cranks).

@Dustin,
The numbers “should” coincide with the distance measured from the bottom bracket to the desired item on the tool.

The results in horizontal (X) or vertical (Y) directions matter and should be read directly from the tool if it is designed and calibrated correctly. That is the whole point of the tool compared to ding the measurements with a tape and level.

As mentioned above, this tool would not work well for Specialized cranks since the bolt is on the opposite side.

It also seems like it would be nice to have a separate locking knob for each direction.
