Bontrager Seat post XXX new

In preparation for the upcoming TrekWorld show at the famous Silverstone Circuit, Trek bicycle UK and Bontrager have been tweeting some photos of the newest goods. Among them – what looks to be an all new design for the Bontrager carbon XXX seat post. In addition to new sculpting of the carbon presumably to increase compliance, the post has an all new clamp design that offers independent fore/aft and tilt adjustments. This of course is a move away from their commonly used single bolt design, but it looks to still make adjustments extremely simple. Even with the extra hardware, Trek UK is claiming it still weighs in at 168g.

This is potentially great news. The single bolt design on the current Bontrager post/mast things are the biggest reason I haven’t even considered Treks. I assume they’ll offer this head for Domane/Madone/Emonda, yes?

The single bolt head design should be banned from existence on any seat post. They are horrible for MTB use and even poor for road applications and slip commonly on bumps and pot holes.

I hope this moves into the seat mast cap for Trek’s main line bikes. I agree with Pancakes, it is one of the only things I don’t like about their line.

@Pancakes: why is that? I have had this system on my Boone and had zero slipping issues, even with doing CX re-mounts and such

I’ve been running the single bolt version on all my mtbs for years with zero issues. I do like this redesign though.

@Pancakes and Chader, tighten to 16Nm with a torque wrench and it will not slip. Only problem with slipping is with home mechanics who don’t own a torque wrench.

@Ty well put.

This design looks clunky and inelegant. I would never buy it and I would replace it if it came OEM.

Yes, I do own and use a torque wrench. Despite that, I have still had issues with the Specialized and Trek designs. I am fairly confident that is why you don’t see the design the Spech MTB posts any more.

Additionally, the prototype for the Redshift seatpost from Kickstarter had a single bolt design. During their funding process, I and many others point out our concerns about their single bolt design. They changed to a 2-bolt/fore-aft design that works great.

I know there are plenty of people who experience problems with these despite the fact that the do work for others. IMO, from an engineering standpoint, it is a flawed design. I think there are much more reliable designs that don’t have the potential issues see in the single bolt design.

Despite never having used a torque wrench on mine I had no problems with the old design moving, don’t let that get in the way of your high horse though! This post looks a bit fussy, but I’m sure, like all Bontrager kit, it’ll do the job well.

The logic applied here hurts my brain.
