Santa Cruz Carbon Nomad Cutaway (1)During a quick visit to the Santa Cruz Factory earlier this week, I had the opportunity to peruse the showroom floor. Nestled in a corner, was this cutaway of the latest Santa Cruz wonder bike.

Drop past the break to see it’s internals neatly displayed…

The Nomad is the first Santa Cruz Bike to feature internal housing. In this cutaway, you can clearly see how they’ve integrated the cable routing through a tube that runs inside the frame. This makes installation and maintenance significantly easier, and prevents the cable from slapping around and making noise.Santa Cruz Carbon Nomad Cutaway (3)

The creases are from a latex bladder being inflated to push the carbon into the mold during the curing process (or that’s the simple way of explaining it.)

On carbon frames, the BB is usually created separately, then bonded to the frame.

haha, reeks with sarcasm TJ! I heard that it is such a pain to route those cables with the rubber stops they included

The internal routing tube should be a requirement for all internally routed cables! I have worked on an Orbea that had similar routing and it was a dream. I would like to see this not only for the ease of installing new cables but I have an issue with a Fuji SST with the brake cable housing running down the top tube rattling like crazy… It looks like a pretty easy way to cut corners when making a frame to me…

The internal tube adds complication (in manufacturing, I.e. $$$) and weight. You cannot add material to a frame and expect it to be lighter. Especially if all the other parts of the frame are already as light as they can be.

I am a complete gaper and I routed my cables. Not hard at all, thanks SC!
