Strava Route Builder tool lets cyclists create maps and move them to app for turn by turn cycling directions

Strava’s Route Builder online tool has been helping cyclists plan a ride since last fall, but until now those finely crafted plans were stuck on their website unless you could export the TCX/GPX file to a compatible GPS cycling computer. Or, of course, you could print out the ol’ paper cue sheet.

Now, you can pull up your routes up directly from the Strava app on both iOS and Android and follow along visually. You can even share the routes with other users so everyone’s on the same page, and segments will show up in real time with real time results (if you want, that feature can be turned off). Should Mother Nature frown upon your segment busting efforts and let loose, the app can even figure out your quickest way home and lead you back.

Best of all, these updates are available to all members, not just premium subscribers. Win. Screenshots below…

iOS shown above, Android below. The route overview is shown on the left, and in-progress on the right. It’s all based on Google Maps, so the streets seem pretty accurate and you can pinch and zoom like normal to instantly get the amount of preview you want. Of course, that also means the in-ride functionality could be limited by available data service even if the GPS is still tracking your overall ride stats.

Update your app now to get the new features.

No turn-by-turn audio directions, just a map with a dot? Has anyone used this yet? I may have to stick with the Track Navigator app for android, otherwise. Track Navigator is most easily used by making a ride w/ gps acct and connecting the TN app to your ride w/ gps acct. Turn by turn with audio is best part of TN but integration between it and ride w/ gps is pretty basic and lacks the social aspect of strava. Come on strava, make something that will replace all the apps I use!

I hope they improved the way the route builder works. I had a hell of a time getting routes to save and open with the previous version. Another super simple tool that is great for mapping routes is this map pedometer – mappedometer.com
