If there wasn’t enough of a fat bike freak out happening at Sea Otter with the launch of the RockShox Bluto and fat bikes built for it, every once in a while you’ll spot something just rolling by. Something like this prototype carbon fat bike rim that was laced to Tim Krueger’s Salsa Bucksaw. With the proliferation of Whisky’s carbon rims, the fat bike aspect isn’t a surprise given their proximity to Salsa as brands under QBP’s roof.

As Tim called it, the Whisky rim will be a “carbon dirt rim,” not another carbon winter fat rim. To make a carbon dirt rim, Whisky is using a 70mm wide profile that is double wall and tubeless ready, and “strong as hell.”

The Whisky rim was just an added bonus as we were checking out Tim and MikeR’s Bucksaws, which we have details on after the jump.

MikeR’s Bucksaw 1 was equipped with the proper spec, using an X01 drivetrain, RockShox Bluto fork, Monarch rear shock, and Reverb Stealth dropper. The bike uses 3.8″ Surly Nates on 65mm Marge Lite rims. Having just come back from 6 days of riding and camping in around Prescott Tim had no problems saying that the bike absolutely rips and rides like an Enduro bike that grips everything. Definitely geared towards the summer, the concept of a summer only full suspension fat bike will surely lead to some head scratching. But – after having a blast on a front suspension equipped Borealis, there may be something to it.

Tim’s build had a similar part selection as MikeR, but uses the BuckSaw 2 gold frameset along with the Whisky Rims.

With new axle spacing sizes, the Bucksaws had some new hubs in 150x15mm for the front and a 177×12 for the rear.

I crave for one of these a lot more that an Sworks or a Black Inc or whatever else cost like a kidney,I can’t really tell if I’m getting sick or actually healing from something…

When is someone going to come out with a carbon aero rim for fat bikes? I’m thinking about a 60mm deep dish designed from proper computational fluid dynamic software with good laminar flow for high speed runs in excess of 40 mph. I’ll need ceramic bearings, of course. A price point of around $5,000 per wheel set is perfectly fine with me.
