Sugoi has taken night-riding visibility to a whole new level with “Visual Technology” called Pixel. Bid adieu to any “subtle, reflective accents,” say hello to blinding brightness. Flash past the break to be stunned and impressed…(batteries not included, or needed)

Don’t let the already-established model name fool you. The 2014 version of the Zap jacket employs Pixel fabric tech; it’s Sugoi’s full re-think on nighttime visibility. Pixel comprises the entire base fabric of the Zap line; no longer are reflective capabilities constrained to discrete piping or accent strips.

Pixel fabrics create “explosive illumination” when reflecting, and that verbiage appears to not be over-hype – just check out the video for proof.

The Pixel technology is not being limited to the Zap jacket. Sugoi’s new shoe covers (Zap booties) almost eclipse the jacket in their stunning brightness. Keep your cadence high enough and motorists will think they’re seeing a superhero blow by in a blur of light.

As Sugoi says, the Pixel fabric “only reveals its hidden power when it’s struck by artificial light.” My two take aways: a) there is hidden superhero power in this tech, and b) we no longer have to wear those crazy, road-sign, hi-vis colors. Yay! (Projected availability is not till September, US price TBD.)

Over here there is “blinding”. And over there: “safety”. They don’t really hang out together.
Words.

I actually just bought the shoe covers last week – in the $70 range (here in Canada). The construction seems solid and the fabric normally is just a pretty matte grey but they do light up well – I was putting them on one morning and a housemate at the other end of the hallway did a full WTF and was both confused and surprised at the brightness of my feet.

There is no insulation, though I don’t mind. I’ve got pretty warm feet so I just need a wind/water barrier and these look like they do the trick.

I’m pretty hard on covers (I had a pair of Giordana ones that I swear lasted two rides…) and so far the fabric seems to be pretty resistant to road scuffs and crank arm rubbing (things that killed past covers). So far my only concern is the stitching at the bottom of the cover that wraps around the shoe – it’s exposed and depending on how much one drags their foot getting on/off the bike this may be a problem. Because road cleats protrude so much from the sole of the shoe there’s less risk the cover will actually make contact with the ground but be’ll see how it goes over the long term.

This looks really promising for rides on the margins of the day.

I like that the gear has a nice classic look during the day, with the added benefit of max visibility. If the fit and function is nice, it’ll be a winner (for me anyway).

Is this basically Nike Vapor Flash jacket (circa 2011) applied to cycling gear?

I don’t get how this is any different than the “illuminite” fabric that has been around for over a decade…

Thoughts?

Not quite Bye-bye Hi Vis – it looks normal in daylight, no? So still a place (unfortunately) for day-glo I guess. But a good start!

Bikeradar.com is reporting the same thing, except that its made by Bioracer, not Sugoi. Sounds like “Pixel” is like Gore-tex and is leasing this tech out to companies.

I had an illuminte running top and a cycling jacket about 10 years ago. They worked great new, but after about 6-10 washes, they no longer reflected worth beans.
Hopefully this technology from Sugoi doesn’t have the same issue.

I still have an Illuminite jacket that reflects very well… and breaths like a plastic trash bag. Due to it’s breathability issues, I haven’t managed to use it enough to deplete it’s reflective properties. I’m very interested in this new fabric’s breathability. Experiences?

North Face has used that type of stuff too, Im curious about the breatheability and durability of the reflective stuff, I might just get the shoe covers, they seem to add quite a bit of visibility.

Still hate the logo though, ugly stuff.
