2014 Continental 650b mountain bike tires

Continental has added 650B sizes for their four most popular mountain bike tires. They’ve also added 29er sizes for the Speed King and Mud King.

The center four tires in the pic all get 27.5″ by 2.2 and 2.4 in either RaceSport or Protection casings. From front to back, they’re the Race King, X King, Mountain King and Trail King. The Protection casings are all tubeless ready and use a 240tpi casing with Black Chili compound on the treads. The XC tires get a bit harder, faster rolling Black Chili, the bigger knobbed tires get a softer, grippier Black Chili. The RaceSport is their light, tube type 180tpi casing.

At the front of the pic is the Speed King 29er, a 440g slick for XC use. At the back is the Mud King, a narrow 1.8 mud specific tire with deep knobs. It’s kept narrow so there’s plenty of frame clearance when things get gummy.

Smart, still no mud tyres for the in-between size then? Can’t believe that!

Why – WHY? – has Continental not come out with road tubeless tires? Yeah – they’d rather make more money selling tubes and tires but pretty soon they will be forced into it. And I thought Eurobike would be the announcement.
