Vision Adds 40 and 55mm Deep Carbon Wheels, Two Color Schemes

Adding to the already available Metron 81, Vision which is an off shoot of FSA has released two new wheels – the Metron 40 and 55. Built using the same CFD analysis and aero testing as the original 81, the 40 and 55 have fairly wide and blunt aerodynamic profiles. Each wheel uses the PRA (preload reduction assembly) hub design as the 81 with sealed ceramic bearings standard. The hubs also feature a 10/11 speed compatible freehub for Shimano or Campagnolo.

Looking to please those who like a more stealth option, each wheel will be available in colored or grey graphics in both tubular and clincher models based on your preference.

Full Specs after the break.

I have kind of been wondering for a while, do blade spokes actually make a difference in aerodynamics of a wheel, are they cosmetic, or are they just stiffer spokes?

Does anyone have any actual not bullshIt answer

@ Fredrick

In terms of stiffness, I have no idea. I guess they could help for aerodynamics if there is no side wind.

Wow those are light clinchers. Price?

@Fredrick

Google search “spoke shape” you should come across a study done by Zipp that may or may not give you answers. You can also do a google image search for the same key words and you’ll get some interesting graphs.

I’m skeptical of the weight on those clinchers. If it’s legit and the wheels are solid…I want!

I agree @Dale. I would be surprised if those are actual weights.

These are crazy light clinchers!!! Lighter than most other comparable sized wheelsets from Zipp, Reynolds, Mavic etc. except Lightweight but they are crazy expensive. How is that possible? Is there a low weight limit for these? I understand that these will cost approx £1,600 for the Metron 40 so also cheaper than most. Surely something must be up as you don’t often get cheap and light with carbon clinchers unless they are as stiff as a wet noodle but as far as I know, Vision makes good products.

Anyone have personal experience with 2:1 spoke wheels? Marketing hype or a real difference in even spoke tensions while still maintaining lateral strength? Thanks

What does ‘fairly wide’ mean when talking about rim width? Are they 23mm? 25mm? That’s actually important to put a number to and not wave your hands in the air about, particularly when thinking about cyclocross wheels. Wider rims mean the tyre stays on better and you can corner harder without rolling the tubular off.

Additional info on price, rim width, and disc brake compatible.

i don t like size 35 mm and 50 are better. weight it s incredible.. FSA chapea! if it s true..give one 40mm at Sagan or Cancellara than we will discuss..

RCSpeed

@ VJGoh-The rims are 25mm at the brake track with max width of 26mm for the 40 and 26.5mm for the 55 tubular.
Clinchers are similar width in brake track but have an increased max width to offset aerodynamics with different tire sizes and widths.

BTW, @dislivello,
-the first race Sagan had on the 40’s was Gent and he pulled a TT solo in the end to win by over 20 seconds… would have been more if he didnt stop to pop a wheelie.
-at Panne, Sagan won again except this time on the 55’s.
-Day after at Panne Vivianni took second (to Cav) on the 55’s.
-Sagan took 2nd at Flanders.

And no…. those weights are not correct.

Any idea on weight limits?

Yeah there’s no way the clinchers are 35g heavier than tubulars.

That’s crazy weight on the clincher, this company is going to look really bad if that’s not the real production weight.

Clincher weights are way to good to be true. Gotta be a typo.

So the clincher weights are misprinted on http://www.visiontechusa.com. You’d think somebody from the company would at least take a glance at this comment section and fix it. If these weights are correct, then every bike publication would be announcing a major weight/price breakthough for carbon aero cinchers. Obviously, this isn’t the case.

So these wheels aren’t disc brake compatible?

whats a few grams amound friends?

Its the braking surface that I am most concerned with- Does it have one? or is this just an off the shelf Gigantex carbon rim

dislivello

Just spoke to the distributor in Malaysia about these wheels, it will retail for circa GBP1.6k-1.7k/USD2.5-2.6k), the RRP is much more than the RRP of ZIPP 404 FC Clinchers over here (GBP1.4-1.5k/USD2k-2.1k).

Allegedly, :o), these wheels are team wheels in the currently on-going Giro Italia and if I heard correctly, the/a Canadian team is also sponsored by Vision and they were mighty pleased with the wheels, so much so, that they called the Vision folks when they were at the Taiwan Cyclefest recently to tell them that the wheels were excellent.

The distributor did say take the wheel weight with a pinch of salt. I was thinking maybe add say 10% to it? It’s expected in Malaysia mid-year to Q3. It is 2014 wheels, I saw the specs in the 2014 catalog on the width, etc and the link above is spot on. Ceramic bearings and light carbon clinchers…worth waiting for.
