hive lightweight trail mountain bike cranksets with dual and single chainrings

Hive’s new TRS cranks are aimed at trail and enduro riders. They’re using the same construction methods as their DH cranks but still bring them in at extremely competitive weights by using a lighter spindle and arms.

The top of the line TRS Race model will come as a single or double chainring set up, and the double is a one-piece CNC machined unit consisting of both rings. 36/22 and 38/24 combos will be available at launch, and a 34/20 will follow (wasn’t on hand to photo).

Weights are 721g with a threaded BB for the double, which is only a few grams heavier than XTR. Single rings come in seven colors in single digit tooth increments from 32 to 40. The single ring spider has removable caps that let you mount a bash guard.

Spiders are designed for one or two rings and are swappable.

New APS (Adaptive Preload System) bottom brackets makes proper preload set up and installation of cranksets easy. Just pick the crankset, rings and BB combo from them, install the BB cups and cranks with a torque wrench then hand tighten the preload ring (black, to the left of the BB cup) and go ride.

A detent spring keeps it from backing out. It’ll come stock on all 2013 TRS and LG1 cranksets. It’s a nice way of getting rid of wave washers and shims.

The cranksets use their P3 Connect spindle, which has a polygon shaped connection so there’s no slippage or deformation.

e-thirteen TRS dual lightweight Chainguide and bashguard

Dual ring Chainguide lineup expanding with the TRS Dual Lightweight. It comes in at about 96g, and there’s a carbon version coming that should be just 68g. Retail is $129, and $149 with bashguard. 36 max tooth. It’ll come with two lower sliders, one for use with the Turbocharger bash guard, one for use without. It’s available in BB mount and ISCG03 and 05.

It’s nice to see the wavey washer disappear.

The preload thing sounds very similar to the old Shimano M970 crankset. Not a bad idea really; I sometimes wonder why Shimano scrapped it and went to pinch bolts with an external preload…

Exactly like the m970.

I had e*thirteen cranks. The crank arm interface is a horrible design. The rounded triangle interface allows flex in the system. Imagine a SS shorttrack start. Its borderline scary.

A splined interface like shimano/sram is definitely the way to go in designing a stiff crank.

Not to mention, mine come loose every month. Now I am blue loctiting the fixing bolt before torquing. Not to mention the BB goes through bearings relatively quickly. Im replacing bearings twice a year.

Love e*thirteen but not their cranks too much.
