2013 Continental Der Kaiser Downhill mountain bike tire

Continental is introducing several new tires at Eurobike, including the Der Kaiser Rammstein DH tire shown here.

Built off feedback from the Athertons and Richey Schley, the Rammstein edition is hand made in Continental’s Korbach, German factory and adds all of their top features. The outer layer’s tread has wedge shaped blocks on the shoulders to firm under hard cornering, and the center is designed to provide both solid acceleration and aggressive braking. The sidewalls have a rubber layer sandwiched between the normal plys that wraps around the bead to provide better pinch flat protection, and those extra layers help reinforce the tire’s shape and provide addititional puncture protection.

It’s available only in a 26 x 2.4 for now with a 360tpi casing with Black Chili compound on the surface. Weight is claimed aroudn 1,200g.

Cyclocross or 650B more your thing? Roll past the break for the new X-King tubies and clinchers…

2013 Continental X-King cyclocross clincher and tubular tires

The popular X-King mountain bike tread officially makes its way to cyclocross with two options. The tubular (right) is their first tubie with the Black Chili compound and is hand sewn in Germany. Conti claims the BC compound has 30% higher grip, but 26% less rolling resistance and 5% greater durability than activated silica rubber. Retail should be around $125 per tire.

The clincher version keeps the symmetrical center knobs and gets widths up to 32c (UCI legal) and 35c (legally awesome) widths and comes in at a much more wallet friendly $55.

The other news from Conti is their expansion into 650B. Here’s the official word:

Continental will bring their full range of unique technologies to bear on the new size including their proprietary Black Chili tread compound and ProTection Revolution Tubeless Ready casing. The new 27.5-inch tires that feature Black Chili compound will be made in Continental’s Korbach Germany facility. To get start the 27.5-inch campaign, Continental has developed their most versatile tread pattern, the X-King. It will be available in both a 2.2 and 2.4-inch width and at least one size in their ProTection RTR casing. Prices are expected to fall directly in line with Continental’s current 26- and 29-inch tire offerings.

Oh look, more tires that Conti won’t actually have produced for another 3 years. These guys dropped the ball and kicked it far away with their 29er tires. Crooked molds and treads that fall off are nothing to be excited about in 650b.
