2012 Scott Spark carbon fiber 29er weight for large size bike

A few weeks back, Scott unveiled their 2012 Spark full suspension mountain bikes. The new model introduced some new suspension technology (dual travel adjust/lockout for front and rear simultaneously) and an all-new 29er model for their flagship suspended XC race bike.

Now, we’ve got our first closeup look at the bike and our handy Park Tools scale on hand. Above, the size Large 29er weighs in at 23lbs 3oz. If you want to get particular, note that some of these were weighed with a Scott carbon bottle cage.

We’ve got much more coming later tonight…stay tuned. Now, it’s off to ride one!

UDPATE: More models and sizes added after the break…

The medium carbon Spark 26″ was 21lbs 5oz.

They had the alloy frames on display, too, but they weren’t spec’d properly as you’ll find them on the showroom floor. The main differences here are the cockpit pieces…the X7/X9 spec’d 40 model isn’t going to come with Ritchey’s WCS stem, carbon post and carbon handlebar. The wheels might not be quite official spec either, but could be (DT Swiss All Mountain). At any rate, this Medium 29er weighed in at just 25lbs 4oz, which, if nothing else, shows that even the alloy Sparks can be built up pretty light with smart component selection.

Same spec story on this one, especially with the wheels. At this price point (X7/X9 drivetrain), there’s no way it’s coming with DT Swiss Tricon wheels or the Ritchey cockpit. Regardless, this one weighed in at a mere 23lbs 12oz.

Detail frame shots coming later this week, Scott’s keeping us pretty busy riding!

Heavier than an S-Works Epic 29er.

Does it not come spec’d with carbon rims?

Great looking bike, regardless.

In an earlier post on the Spark 29er, it was shown with some DT XCR 1??? wheels, so it very well could be that it’ll have carbon rims.

But something to keep in mind is that the Scott coming with off-the-shielf cranks, stem, seatpost, etc and it is just a little heavier.

Bottom line:
If they’re not the right spec then its not a good source of info really is it.
Any bike will be lighter with a $1,000 set of wheels, not to mention seat posts and stems.
Thanks for the pics tho.
