Ahrens Bicycles and 324 Labs has taken the brainchild of racer Tim Canaard and brought it to life as an alternative go-between for running your road levers with hydraulic disc brakes. While it may look big, the system only adds approximately 4g to the 277g claimed weight of Formula’s R1 brake system after removing the levers. Considering a road caliper and the cable and housing isn’t far below that weight, total mass gain is negligible, but you gain some serious stopping power!

324 LABS is now accepting pre-orders for the system with introductory pricing set at $140 and includes:

  • Left Clamp, Split Style, 31.8mm, Hard Anodized aluminum
  • Right Clamp, Split Style, 31.8mm, Hard Anodized aluminum
  • Actuator Arm, Formula R1 brake, Hard Anodized aluminum
  • Stainless Steel Mounting Hardware
  • Wheels Manufacturing CNC Machined Brake Ferrules

324 Labs says pre-orders should be ready to ship at the end of the month, giving you just enough time to order up a disc ready cyclocross frame. Moots will make one for you. Just sayin’.

If that weight claim is true, the apologists for the UCI and banning disc brakes on road bikes have one less skimpy argument to use…

“Actuator Arm, Formula R1 brake, Hard Anodized aluminum”
No way that $140 includes the caliper

“Stainless Steel Mounting Hardware”
Further potential to save weight

Sorry for any confusion…the kit does not include the R1 brakes. My part descriptions are very detailed since other brands are already in the works; and each brand may require specific clamps and/or actuator arms to make the system work.

Gabe, sorry for any confusion – the $140 kit does not include the R1 brakes. My part descriptions are very detailed since kits for other brake brands are already in the works; and each brand may require specific clamp geometry and/or actuator arms. For now we decided to go with stainless steel mounting hardware since it’s easy to source and much lower cost than titanium or aluminum alternatives.

What the heck. We’ll throw in the R1 brakes.

So they will not work with the RX from Formula?

Yes, they will work with the RX brakes also…however all of our current testing revolves around the R1. And we are NOT throwing in the R1 brakes!

Sorry the 324 adapter kits ONLY work with FORMULA R1 brakes. They are NOT compatible with the RX brakes since handlebar mounting clamp geometry is different than the RX. My mistake and sorry for any confusion!
