Gu’s new Brew Electrolyte Tablets are the latest in a series of electrolyte drinks to land on our doorstep in tablet form.  Dropped in a 16-20oz water bottle, Brew Electrolyte Tablets deliver a fizzy hit of flavor, electrolytes and potassium, without the calories or heaviness of energy drinks.  How do they work?  Though really intended as a pre- and post-ride drink, on an early-season weekend in Sedona (with temperatures well into the 80s) the Gu tablets kept me feeling fresh for as much as 4 hours per day (and more sweating than I’d done all year).  Aside from the tasty Peach Tea flavor, my favorite aspect of the Brew tabs is the fact that they don’t generate the usual energy drink phlem.  I can’t tell you how long I’ve been looking for a phlegm-free drink.  Zach initially reviewed them when they first came out, but what do I think about them in the long run? Read on to find out…

Because I’m not a fan of fizzy drinks while riding- there’s nothing quite like a hit of carbon dioxide when working hard and they tend to bubble out of the bottle to end up all over my bike- I’ve gotten in the habit of dropping a tablet into my bottle the night before a ride.  That, and the lack of any real energy content, is why Gu recommend Brew tabs more when their powdered Gu Brew isn’t readily available.  That said, because the tablets don’t mean packing a massive canister of powder along, Brew Electrolyte Tablets are quickly becoming my travel beverage of choice.  I’ve also found that they’re also nice to keep in the car for a post-ride fizzy drink- especially nice on hot days…  $6.50 at your local shop will buy you 12 tablets.  Check ’em out at guenergy.com.
