Chain lube reviews are tough to write. The best lube is heavily depended on conditions, use, maintenance, and personal preference. I’ve been using Motorex Dry Lube on (go figure) dry days for a few months now, and like most chain lubes I’ve tried, it’s kept my chain shifting and not squeaking. But that’s not all there is to this Swiss-imported lube.

Like many bike lube brands, Motorex started in motorcycle maintenance, and eventually expanded to the cycling industry. But Motorex, as rep. Joe Hurd tells me, started from the ground up, creating an all new line specifically engineered for cycling. But did it work?

Motorex did a lot of things right with the Dry Lube, but, it’s not for everyone. It’s made it into the pro peloton on the bikes of the BMC Pro Team, and sponsors the Trek World Racing and Multivan Merida mountain bike teams, but might not be right for the occasional rider.

The lube kept the drivetrain smooth and quiet, but it’s important to start with a clean chain. I tried the wax-oil formula on several chains in various states of maintenance, and it had trouble penetrating moderately dirty chains. If you are wiping your chain regularly and replacing as needed, this shouldn’t be a problem, but this is not a lube designed with the casual cyclist in mind.

It did well in keeping the chain clean on long, dusty rides, and was easy to wipe off after application so there was very little excess. If you wipe the chain down after each ride, you can keep the chain reasonably clean for a few rides, but you will need to keep applying lube.

If your bike gets regular maintenance, it’s top level product at home in any level drivetrain.
