Bellwether may not be the first name you think of when it comes to high end cycling wear, but with their new focus on materials, details and function that is changing. The new Phase jersey mixes functional fabrics with a cool look, all at a great price. Read on to learn more. Starting with the Phase jersey, the attention to details is obvious. Different fabrics in strategic places shows this piece was well thought out before it came out. Bellwether uses Xforma and Xfactor fabrics to make the Phase great for those hot days. Xfactor is a mesh like fabric that is designed to spread out droplets of water, or sweat, to increase ventilation. It is also an open fabric, allowing even more air in for cooling. The Xfactor fabric is placed along the back and under the arms. The Xforma fabric is used everywhere else and has a soft feel to it. It is also designed for moisture wicking and feels nice against your skin.

The fit of the Phase is definitely racer inspired. I found it to be just right in a size medium, I am 5’9″ and 160, but others may find it tight. The arm have no elastic in them and are easily rolled up. I hate tan lines so I am often rolling the sleeves up and down to prevent any unsightly lines. Some jerseys pinch and constrict, but the Phase felt perfect. I liked the higher neck line too, but again, others may find it intrusive. More functional construction shows up in the three rear pockets. The side ones are angled for easier access and the middle one has a zipper for those can’t lose items. A full zip front makes it easy to put on and take off. Other nice details include the silicon gripper along the bottom of the jersey to keep it in place and reflective logos to make you more visible during those early morning or dusk commutes.

Nice details like angled and zippered pockets make the Phase a great jersey.

I wore this jersey on long hot rides and found it to be a great choice. Even with the zipper pulled to the top I never felt like I was too hot or overheating. Flat lock seems kept me from feeling any irritation or rubbing.  While certainly subjective, I am a big fan of the look of this jersey. Some may think it’s overdone, but I like the white with red and black accents. It’s not too flashy and not too plain. It works well with plain black shorts and some of the other bibs I have.

The best part about the Phase is the price. At an M.S.R.P. of $65, it’s a great bargain. Bellwether has done a great job of creating a jersey that meets all the requirements of a high end road rider. For all the details or to order the Phase, go to www.profile-design.com.
