The new Shimano XT Dynasys 10-speed group just showed up at our office, and we’ve pulled it out and weighed it all!

Introduced officially at Sea Otter last month, the new 3×10 Dynasys drivetrains will be available on XT and SLX later this year, with press getting some early sets to play with…and this particular set is going to be raced for 24 hour this weekend.  We’ve got posts with full specs and on the bike photos already (links at bottom of post), and now we’ve got up close component photos and actual, hands-on weights.

Dive on in…

XT 3×10 CRANKSET & BOTTOM BRACKET

Here’s what’s in the box.  The second arm, spacers, locknut and instructions are underneath.

Weight: 767g.

The middle ring is the only one that keeps its former tooth count at 32.  The big ring drops to 42, and the granny moves up to 24, narrowing the gearing range for less dramatic changes when shifting between rings.  Check out the holes in the middle ring’s teeth. Yes, it’s like that on current gen XT, but it’s pretty cool.  It also illustrates that not a whole lot else has changed other than the gear ratios, the addition of a 10th gear in the back and the move to a Dynasys directional chain like the high end road groups.  Shimano said before this wasn’t a redesign for the XT and SLX groups, just new shifting and gearing technology.

Per usual, the small chainring bolts directly into the spider, so you could very easily remove it and run this as a 2×10.

Bottom bracket weight is 90g.

Spacers and lock nut weigh in at 9g. So, depending on how many spacers you use, the crankset/BB has a combined weight of 860g to 867g (the lower weight just assumes you’re using the lock nut).

XT 10-SPEED CASSETTE

Lots of cardboard inside the box.

We received the largest (11-36) of the three cassette options, and it weighed in at 337g.  Presumably the two smaller (11-32 and 11-34) would be a bit lighter.  The larger 36T cog helps make up for the increased tooth count on the granny.

The 10-speed Dynasys cassette uses a 3+3 spider structure (the biggest three cogs are on one spider, the next three are on a second spider and the four smallest are loose with spacers).

XT 10-SPEED REAR DERAILLEUR

All of the 10-speed items’ boxes are clearly marked with the Dynasys logo, as are the components.

Weight: 238g.

XT DYNASYS FRONT DERAILLEUR

The XT Dynasys front derailleur comes with spacers to fit smaller diameter seat tubes.

Weight: 146g.

Weight of the spacers, should you need them: 12g.

XT DYNASYS REAR SHIFTER

2011-shimano-xt-10speed-dynasys-shifter-weight01

The Dynasys shifter only changes the rear shifter pod to add the additional gear and change the amount of cable pull/release per shift.  Since there’s no change in cable movement or number of gears on the front, you would just use a normal XT (or any other) shifter for the front.  It keeps all of Shimano’s standard mountain bike tech like Rapidfire Plus and a removable optical gear display.

2011-shimano-xt-10speed-dynasys-shifter-weight03

Weight: 142g with cable.

2011-shimano-xt-10speed-dynasys-shifter-weight02

The shifter comes with cable housing, and if you manage to use all of it, you’d be adding 59g to your bike.

First ride impressions will be coming soon!

Doesn’t seem this is comparable in weight to even Sram XO….
more like X7 in some places and X9 in others.
That cassette weight is off the charts heavy….but it does have quite a few large gears.

nice work guys – more scale photos of this kind of new product!

Will 10sp ready derailleur work with 9sp shifter, cassette and chain?

It shouldn’t be comparible to X0, that’s what XTR is for! 🙂

XT’s groupset COST (from a distributor) is about 100 dollars more expensive than X9’s, making it closer to 200 dollars more expensive street price, depending on who you’re buying from. XTR is now (almost) exactly the same price as XX. Shimano did a pretty similar thing with their mountain lineup that they did in their road lineup.
