The Chicago Tribune reports that Madison, WI, bike cops are cracking down on cyclists’ traffic infractions, citing ten riders last Wednesday for running a stop light and handing out $63 tickets.

Police there say they are on the lookout and have several targeted enforcement days planned this week and in September when students are all back in school.  So, be on the lookout for bicycle police or, crazy as it sounds, obey the traffic rules to avoid getting snagged in the downtown area.

Actually, I think this could be a good thing. If more motorists are aware that we all share the same rules on the road and that cyclists ARE following them, then maybe they might be more forgiving to riders.

I concur with James S but I also must ask, how many motorists were cited? I daily see motorists running stop signs and occasionally stop lights, especially when turning right.

They are doing the same thing in Ottawa – a few weeks after a driver plowed into five riders who where “safely” riding in a bike lane. One is still in hospital. I commute daily and the stupidity I see on bike drives me nuts. Paints us all with the same brush. But … it’s kinda scary out there the way some drive as well.
