SRAM is rumored to be working on an all-new “XX” cross-country mountain bike group for a global launch in summer 2009.

Apparently, only OEM customers are the only ones that have any details, but our top secret inside sources all but confirmed it’s going to be a 2×10 drivetrain!

Billed as a 2010 component group, it will be a collaboration among all of SRAM’s units (Truvativ, Avid, SRAM and RockShox) to be a comprehensive XC mountain group.  The focus of the group will be on lightweight and high performance.

Given the breadth of SRAM’s brands, it’s likely that a whole lot of the group is going to be carbon fiber.  After all, that’s where virtually everything’s headed, from wheels to cranks, and with SRAM’s recent acquisition of Zipp, it’s not a stretch to imagine a carbon rimmed wheelset.  Bontrager’s got ’em, and Trek’s using a 2×9 FSA set up on the new Top Fuel to reduce weight.

One thing that would be really cool and that’s very likely is to get the “powerdome” rear cassette like on the road-going RED group.  Not only would it drop weight, but it would be sooooo much easier to clean!  This is highly probably given that they’ve proven the design already with their road groups.
