Missy Giove May Face $2 Million Marijuana Possession Charge

missy giove with monkey during a norba national downhill race before facing marijuana possession drug charges

I dug this photo out of the garage of (from left to right) me, Missy Giove, Sweetie and Missy’s mechanic at the time, Monkey.  This is from a NORBA National DH race long ago.  Not shown: the other (alleged) monkey on her back.

Now 37, Missy “the Missile” Giove is charged with “conspiring to possess and distribute more than 100kg of marijuana.  She’s being held on $250,000 bond and facing a possible $2 million fine and up to 40 years in prison after being caught with more than 200 pounds of marijauna.

Authorities seized the drugs from the back of a truck she was driving in upstate NY.  Her alleged partner in crime, Eric Canori, is right there with her in U.S. Marshall custody after authorities found about another 150 pounds at his Saratoga Springs, NY, home…oh, and $1 million cash hidden in the basement. WTF!

Public defender Tim Austin alleged the drugs were planted in Giove’s truck, possibly even by police.  More here and here.  I guess those Reebok ads didn’t pay as well as one would have hoped…

Ashland Super-D Mountain Bike Race Recap

willow koerber at ashland oregon super d downhill mountain bike race

Recap from SRAM: Breakaway Event in Ashland, Oregon hosted the longest and most demanding race in Oregon. The course was fast and flowy with some wicked peddling. With over 5,000 vertical feet of descending, the twelve mile Super D event attracted some of the greatest riders to Oregon.

The weather varied as much as the terrain featuring fog, rain and blue skies. The unique weather found some riders choosing different gear, like cross country helmets and full goggles. The course beckoned to find out how fast racers were willing to go with a mix of fire roads and tight single track. Within just a few minutes of the start, the athletes were treated to a lung burning climb.

Some of our favorite athletes had less than perfect luck with both Kirt Vories and Eric Carter having flat tire issues. Local hero and overall favorite, Nathan Riddle scorched the course only to catch a tree mid-air to end his epic run in a glorious crash.

Willow Koerber (pictured above) combined her fitness and riding skills to win the Pro Women catagory. Willow said, “The riding was an absolute blast. I had so much fun that I had to laugh at times as the weekend provided pure mountain bike enjoyment.”

Fort Williams World Cup DH #4 Recap

Recap provided by SRAM: This past weekend marked the fourth round of gravity racing in the mountain bike World Cup series. If you didn’t get up in the wee morning hours to catch it on Freecaster (Editor’s Note: Never fear, we embedded it above!  If it’s loading slow, just hit pause and come back about 20 minutes later for uninterupted play.), you missed some heated racing! Fort William, Scotland is known for wet weather, huge crowds that never disappoint, and arm-blasting ruble!

The Santa Cruz Syndicate has now won four out of four. Frenzied fans were lucky enough to witness Greg Minnaar of the Santa Cruz Syndicate make short work of the rock filled race course and won with a time of 4:38.98. As Greg crossed the finish he was surrounded by his closest mates and extended South African family. South Africa was alive and well in the Scottish pits that night! Runner up Sam Hill was hungry for a win but fell short by a second and a half. Sam would later say, “Syndicate got their four in a row, now it’s time to get my four”.

Steve Peat (1st place overall) and Greg Minnaar (2nd place overall) currently stand at two wins each with only 150 points separating the top five riders in the overall standings. It’s the closest action seen in years, and racers need to have a good, if not great qualifying run to maintain points in the race for the overall DH title.

Four Cross is a crowd favorite in Fort William. Spectators lined the track and even hung from trees to witness the side-by-side racing action. Jill Kintner displayed her talent with a strong move in the first corner and continuing to battle Fionn and Caroline Buchanan for the win. You have to give it up for Jill this year. Jill wears many hats acting as Team Manager, Mechanic, PR manager and athlete. Congratulations on the win and for moving up into the top position in the overall standing!

The Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup will be in Fort William Scotland this weekend, June 6th and 7th. For a rundown of race favorites check out this article. Apparently the man to beat is this guy, Steve Peat. A rider from the Santa Cruz Syndicate; Peat has set the record for most World Cup wins with 17 wins. You can watch video footage of the races this weekend, usually with wild British commentary, at Freecaster.tv.

“Rad Ross” Breaks Hip and Keeps Racing

Rad Ross Schnell breaks hip at french enduro cup On a list of things I would do after breaking my hip; finishing three additional stages in a downhill race doesn’t rank too high. That’s what “Rad Ross” Schnell the All Mountain world champion mountain bike racer did. Schnell was competing in the 10 stage French Enduro Mountain Bike Cup in Metabief, France.

Near the end of the 4th stage, after having navigated the seemingly trecherous section of the course, he wiped out in some wet grass at 30 MPH. Pumped full of adrenaline he jumped back on his bike and finished 4th on the stage. After finishing three more races he thought “something’s wrong” and after finding a small hospital and getting X-rays, it was clear he had broken the greater trochanter area of his left femur.

SRAM & Breakaway Events Host Ashland 12-Mile

avid-chainless-challenge…and the first ever Avid Chainless Challenge!

FROM SRAM: Since 2006, the small college town of Ashland, Oregon, set in the picturesque mountains of Southern Oregon, has been host to some of the best All-Mountain racing in the North America. With the huge success of events like the Downieville Classic, “All-Mountain” racing is taking-off and bringing with it a vibe not felt since the early days of mountain bike racing.

From the top of Mt. Ashland to the downtown area, the Ashland 12 Mile Super D course reflects what the name implies, 12 miles of Super  Downhill. This means mostly downhill with just enough climbing to cough-up a lung or two. Suited for a 5 to 6 inch “All-Mountain Weapon” the bike has to be light enough to slog up a 400 feet of climbing and tough enough to handle 10 plus miles of white knuckled downhill. Past contenders claim, “it’s a true test of rider and equipment”.

For the last three years All-Mountain legend Mark Weir has owned the event, posting a record time of 35 minutes 22 seconds. This year he’ll be defending his winning streak against veterans like Eric Carter (GT) local favorite Nathan Riddle (Fluidride), and a slew of first timers including: 2008 Downieville Classic winner Ross Schnell (TREK, crankbrothers, Oakley), 2000 Downhill World Champ Myles Rockwell (SRAM, Giant, Mavic), All-Ride honch and all around great guy Kirt Voreis (Santa Cruz Syndicate/All-Ride), and finding time between her hectic World Cup XC schedule Suburu Gary Fisher’s, Willow Koerber.
