The new Sony FDR X3000 replaces the X1000 introduced in 2015, ushering in a few technological updates and a wealth of welcome new accessories and mounts, including a smaller but better Live View remote.

The biggest of the improvements is the Balanced Optical Steady Shot image stabilization. Where the prior version would simply crop down your image slightly then stabilize the footage digitally, this new optical version leaves the full frame intact since the lens floats in space to reduce vibration (drones) and shakiness (you).

Important bits like 4K recording at 30fps (and full 1080 at 120fps for super slow motion), GPS tracking for speed and route overlays in post edit, WiFi for connecting to your smartphone apps, in-camera highlight reel creation and more all carry over…

With the revised layout of the new, smaller Live View remote comes an entirely new user interface that looks more descriptive and, Sony says, easier to navigate and use. You can also change settings and control multiple cameras via the Action Cam app on iOS/Android smart phones, too.

The new Live View remote isn’t just smaller, it’s also now equipped (as is the camera) with Bluetooth, allowing lower energy on/off controls. Switch to a WiFi connection and you’ll have full control over all of the camera’s features and live streaming of your video. This does take a toll on the battery, but you can use it to get the shot lined up, then turn off the remote.

With the new remote also comes several slick new mounts. The Finger Grip turns it into a small camcorder, and handlebar mounts for the remote put it in easy view on the bike.

Sony Europe put together the video above that shows more of the features, including the improved Zeiss lens with less peripheral distortion. And yes, it’s true, the new cam is slightly smaller than the previous 4K Action Cam. Video below shows footage from the camera in various situations, including some on bike action.

The icing on the cake is that prices appear to have dropped $100, too. The FDR x3000 with included waterproof case (good down to 60m) will be $399, add in the remote and get the complete package for $499. Available in the U.S. around the end of September, on sale now in Europe and UK.

its still a good bit heavier and bigger than the sony hdr az1 though the lens and sensor are much better.
wish they did a smaller version without gps, screen, etc of this. right now, theres a gazillion of similar action cams in that weight/quality range with at least digital stabilization (though hybrid is potentially better on the sony)

It is as big as the AS50, so just slightly bigger than the AZ1 or exaxtly as big as the AZ1 with the 1/4 inch railm, which you need to mount it without the case.

I have the HDR-AS50 and it’s a great camera … but if you’re using it in the housing, there is basically no sound. Even without the housing, the mic is very weak and sound pretty much sucks.

Wow, that camera seems to be way better than every other cam on the market – I just saw a FDR X3000 video of Thomas Vanderham, which is so buttery smooth and that WITHOUT any gimbal or additional accessories.

Here is the video:

I’d really like an action camera that is just a wide lens on a mount, with a wire coming out the back to go to the recorder. That way, you could have a little lens mounted just about anywhere on your person, or the bike, and just stuff the bulky recorder bit in a pocket.

I have two HDR-AZ1’s and did not upgrade to the X1000 when it released, this might be a good step into 4K and I would consider it as a replacement for one of my AZ1’s.
