The Stages Cycling power meters have always worked very well with other head units, but to take their training system to the next level it was time for something new. Enter the Stages Dash GPS head unit – a completely customizable system that is designed to work with both the Stages powermeters as well as the Stages Link training system. Shown at Eurobike in prototype form, the Dash has a few interesting features that should help it break away from the pack…

According to Stages, the Dash is the first head unit that quickly adapts from portrait to landscape mode which provides a number of options for mounting. More impressive though is the huge range of customizable cells to display as little or as much data as you’d like in 1-16 different fields. Each cell is then also customizable in size so you can have more important numbers like power, show up larger than other numbers like time. You can also tune the display so that half of the screen always stays the same while the other half of the screen scrolls through various metrics. Essentially, you can set it up exactly how you want it and you can even change it on the fly while out on a ride.

Using a different mounting system than most computers, the Dash uses aluminum mounts that clips onto the top or the side of the head unit. The various mounts were still mostly 3D printed prototypes at the show, but they will have options for road bike center mounts, mountain bikes, TT bikes, and more.

Built with a claimed 30 hour battery life and micro USB rechargeable, the head unit will be both Bluetooth and ANT+ compatible and should sell for $399 in the first quarter of 2017.

R&D $$ well spent? or do they see software and computers as the future of their company with the PM market getting so crowded and not having the ability to produce a sub $500 dual sided, self-apply PM for carbon and aluminum cranks? even if they had that ability, for how long would they hold a market advantage until the big players made a similar offering OEM?

ok, after seeing a more in depth review, this is definitely a nice computer designed for coaches and their athletes.

Throw a GPS in there and I’m kissing my Garmin Edge 1000 good bye. I’m just sick of it crashing mid ride.

I didn’t make myself clear. What I’d really like would be turn-by-turn navigation which it doesn’t have.

Waaaay too expensive. I bought a Bryton 310 with cadence and speed sensors (ANT+) 71 data types (I only use about 7), fully customisable screens, power meter compatible etc etc for less than half what the Stages costs.

If the Stages came with the power meter as well that would make sense otherwise its just too expensive for what it is.

If you don’t see the value in this, then it’s not for you. Clearly this is aimed at people who are seriously training with power, and is more in competition with similar units supplied by Pioneer and SRM, rather than regular bike computers.

Its just a display, it doesn’t matter how serious you are, its just displaying data from GPS and external sensors.

Do some research.

16 fields of data, on the bike prompts, complete integration with stages power meter and link software, portrait and landscape options, automatic FTP and training zone updates…. NOT just a display.

Not a competitive unit at $399. At $299 maybe.
