While direct mount rings from the big brands and aftermarket providers have easily dropped their tooth counts down into the twenties, getting an oval chainring with less than a 32-tooth spread for four-arm spiders has been a challenge. Now, thanks to some clever engineering, AbsoluteBlack has managed to dip down to 30 teeth while still using a standard 104bcd mounting pattern. It just took seven months of testing and a couple non-standard parts…

The issue with making an oval chainring smaller than 32 tooth is that at least two of the chainring bolts would be sitting inside the space used by the teeth. If you used standard M8 threaded inserts and bolts, that is.

AB’s solution was to use smaller M5 bolts, similar to what’s used to hold your disc brake rotors on the hub, with eccentric spacers.

These provide the clearance needed without invading the chain’s personal space, letting you run a 30-tooth oval on your 104bcd cranks. The ovality is the same as their other rings, so there’s no difference in pedaling feel or performance if you’re already using their larger rings.

Claimed weight is 36g for the ring and 7g for the included hardware (two alloy M8x8mm bolts + two stainless steel M5x8mm bolts + two spacers). Retail is $74 (€64.50 / £52).

FWIW, they also mentioned that their narrow/wide chainrings are compatible with SRAM Eagle 12-speed chains and drivetrains. Here’s Absoluteblack founder Marcin’s statement:

“(We want to point) out that our entire range of chainrings is also compatible with the new SRAM Eagle 12spd drivetrains. This is a response to a commonly asked question. There is no need for special hooked tooth shape in order to get things working properly. SRAM has marketed their new rings as the only ones that will work with Eagle chain and cassette. But fact is that the chain has changed only minimally in dimensions versus the 11spd one and we already have done a small running adjustment (before Eagle became available) to our Absoluteblack chainring tooth thickness to accommodate the changes to the new SRAM Eagle chain.”

Second that, I ran a 28 tooth Ablsolute Black on Eagle… much better chain retention and quietness than the Race Face ring that I’m running now (that is factory on the Next SL crank). Before replacing my old XX1 bike I’d been better satisfied with the wear and chain retention of the Absolute Black chainring than the stock Sram ring (first Gen narrow wide) to.

Would love to buy their rings, too bad their phillosophy on oval timing is completely different than mine. It seems they have max chain pull well past the point of max torque.

I have 32t and 34t Absolute Black oval chainrings. A month ago, I compared it to Rotor’s 36t Q-Rings. The ‘ovality’ is bigger (major axis is longer) on AB’s oval than Rotor’s Q-Rings. Timing is so-so similar – however, compare a 104 and a 110 BCD chainring is not that easy, like two with same BCD. I found that, AB’s oval timing is somewhere between Rotor’s OCP3 and OCP4 (if any of you have more accurate measurements, don’t hesitate to share the information).

This bolt system should also enable smaller round inner rings for road cranks too…

It could, but not for doubles, since the ring spacing would be thrown to hell.

Hi Guys,
Comparing road rings to mtb rings and on top from different brands will not tell you much.
It’s because Rotor and us learned over time that oval should be designed for specific pedaling behavior. Your pedaling is different on the road and mtb in terms of cadence, fluidity of movement etc. So shapes and timing will also be different even between same size mtb 104bcd and 110bcd chainirng (just an example).

Where we did things different to Rotor is we pushed it even further in mtb and chainring ovality and timing change with chainring size as well because we learned that people who use for eg 26T ring as 1X have different pedaling style than someone using 32T oval on same trail. Maybe this sounds hard to believe for some but this is the reality. Some people buy small ring for a reason, same with others who buy much larger one for that matter. This is also why our chainrings fit so many people so well regardless what they use.

Stephen – yes it’s possible.
