Abandoning the auto for the bike is all well and good, until you wanna get outta dodge and hit the trails well outside of town. Sure, you might be able to bum a ride from friends now and then, but when schedules don’t mesh, you don’t want to be stuck. Now, Yakima’s helping make it a bit easier in areas serviced by Zipcar by outfitting some vehicles with their Streamline base rack system.

Those will be paired with FrontLoader bike tray mounts, FatCat 6 ski/snowboard mounts and/or SUPdawg paddle and surf board mounts. About 150 cars in 17 markets will be so equipped, each one capable of holding more than one piece of equipment (two bikes, to be exact), so you can even pick up a friend. Check out their Yakima-specific web page for details and availability. You’ll find them on Subaru Impreza and Crosstrek models for the U.S., and the Hyundai Elantra in Canada.

I wonder how many bikes will get run into low overhangs (drive-thru’s, parking garages, low branches, etc) on these zipcars. Or how many things will fall off because the user doesn’t really know how to properly secure the items.

I already notice many (not all but many) zipcars (and other car share drivers) are some of the worst drivers on the road since they don’t drive on a regular basis and are either out of practice or just scared to drive in the first place.

Ha, good points. My buddy jacked the life out of the roof on his car by driving it into a garage.

They need to equip the cars (or make users download the app) with the RackReminder app (or something similar).

More importantly, who is going to pay for the damage done to the bike when that Zipcar does drive under the overhand with too little clearance?

Or buy a seasucker and rent a car for like $20 a day
