While there are some bigger updates coming to other models in early August, Five Ten showed us some mid-season updates to the Kestrel and Freerider, including these sweet new purple colors for women.

The Kestrel (shown on bottom) came out last year as their all-mountain clipless shoe that was stiff and protective. It has a dual compound outsole, the first time they’ve done that, with a C4 rubber on the front surrounding the cleat so that it was juuuust grippy enough without making it difficult to clip out. Step into the full details below…

It has a carbon infused nylon shank to make it stiff enough for all day pedaling, with TPU sections in the upper to support the foot. An EVA padding keeps it comfy, as does the sock liner.

This new gray-and-yellow color gives it some pop. Retail is $180, available September 1. Structurally it doesn’t change yet, but they hinted at a new version for next year that will better balance out the BOA tension from top to bottom. Not shown, the recent Kestrel Lace with Velcro strap adds a nylon shank so it’s a little better for hike-a-bike sections. Retail is $150.

Women’s Freerider Canvas gets new all-purple color, and the Freerider Contact gets new black with purple trim option. Both coming September 1.

Not shown here, the Freerider EPS was first seen at Sea Otter and will get a seamless upper to make it waterproof and lined with Primaloft Gold, making it a killer winter mountain bike shoe that should go over well with fat bikers thanks to a heat reflective foot bed and gussetted tongue. Retail will be $140 low, $150 mid top. Comes out August 1.

The Kestrel may be the best looking shoe on the market, but BOA is total garbage for anyone who rides their MTB near rocks. Also, I have a set of Impacts whose sole has lasted 3 years, whereas the Kestrel toe-area tread lasts maybe 5 rides? Granted, it was rough SoCal stone HAB stuff … but the Impact soles lasted 3+ years over the same stuff.

So true, actually “broke” the shank off on my Minnaar version. That is a joke for a shoe that goes for over 220 bucks in Canada. Lets see what the rep says.

I wish they were making the purple for men’s shoes, i just got my first pair but would strongly consider a new one for that color!
