If everything goes according to plan, Shimano will soon be able to outfit you for your ride from head to toe. The company recently announced the plan to acquire Lazer Sport NV, the longest running helmet manufacturer who is based out of Belgium. While the paperwork has been signed, the deal still has to pass through the typical regulatory processes associated with business acquisitions. We’ve been promised more details in the near future, but the deal appears to only include Lazer’s Bike and Snow divisions which are run under Lazer Sport NV, while the powersports division operates under Lazer SA. According to terms of the deal, Lazer Sport NV would keep all of its employees in Antwerp, Belgium as well as current company owner Sean van Waes and Sales Director Peter Steenwegen as members of the board.

Shimano already offers its customers clothing, shoes, and bags from both their own brand and Pearl Izumi, so with the addition of Lazer, this would create the full package. What isn’t clear is if Lazer helmets will continue to be distributed by QBP, or if they will follow in the footsteps of Shimano and PI in the U.S. and go dealer direct.

Full PR after the break…

From Shimano:

Shimano Europe (Shimano) is proud to announce that it has signed an agreement for the acquisition of Lazer Sport NV (Lazer), the Belgian helmet company, on 30 June 2016.

The transaction is subject to receipt of regulatory clearances and other customary closing conditions. Shimano and Lazer expect to close the transaction in the second half of 2016.

Lazer, founded in 1919, is the world’s oldest helmet company, designing, manufacturing and marketing its protective headwear products for cycling, leisure and winter sports in more than 50 countries over five continents.

SHIMANO AND LAZER

Shimano’s acquisition of Lazer advances its mission to support people across the world to enjoy cycling and inspire excitement for exploring by bike. Lazer headwear complements Shimano’s own clothing, footwear and eyewear products, as well as Pearl Izumi clothing, also owned by Shimano, to bring a complete top-to-toe line up for on the bike use.

Sean van Waes, Managing Director: “This is a complete win-win for Lazer and Shimano. It allows Lazer to concentrate on what we do best – innovation – helping us to become the biggest helmet brand in the world at a faster pace whilst giving Shimano access to the best helmets in the business.”

“By combining Shimano’s customer base with our unique patents, technologies and products, the Shimano group will be well positioned to equip road, MTB, urban and leisure bike riders with a full mix of innovative components and accessories.”

EXPANDED REACH

The combination of the two companies will increase the value Shimano and Lazer deliver to distributors and retailers in the cycle industry, whilst expanding Shimano’s portfolio.

For all customers and consumers, the acquisition brings greater expertise to both companies, which will allow for the enhanced creation and delivery of products on both sides. This in turn will enable retailers to bring better products into stores and enhance the experiences of everyone who rides a bike.

Marc Van Rooij, President of Shimano Europe: “When we made the decision to expand our portfolio we were looking to invest in a strong and successful global brand that resonated well with consumers. We’re very pleased to say that in Lazer we found the perfect match.

“We have become big fans of Lazer products and what Lazer has achieved. This exciting acquisition allows us to strengthen our position in key markets across the world and benefit from the technological expertise Lazer has built up in its helmet division. We look forward to working with our new Lazer colleagues in the near future.”

Under the terms of the acquisition agreement, Lazer company owners Sean van Waes and Peter Steenwegen, Sales Director, will remain an integral part of the Lazer management board. All staff will also remain with the company at its base in Antwerp, Belgium.

Me neither. We should take a moment to relive the hilarious videos from the “Lazer Stunt Guy.”

Wonder what the original name of the company started in 1919 was … doubt it was Lazer.

Another apparel product Shimano will ruin the fit on. I used to have a bunch of Pearl Izumi riding gear, since Shimano bought them nothing fits as well and the materials certainly have not been keeping pace with Voler or Craft. I guess if one is a block head this might be a good thing.

While I agree that Pearl sucks, I think this is the first time I’ve ever heard Voler spoken of in positive tones. It’s been awhile, but I always rated them a step above Champ-sys and 3 or 4 below the Capos/Castellis/Sportfuls/etc… Are they really that much better now?

I hate Shimano but they didn’t ruin the fit of Pearl gear. They changed it. It used to fit me like crap and now, it fits great. Whenever anyone changes the fit of something, it’s gonna help someone and bother someone else.

Well, I suppose our shop will be finding new helmets to carry soon, since these will no doubt be sold at below-dealer-wholesale online soon.

Seriously, there goes one of the best product lines QBP carried. I’ve always liked Lazer’s helmets a lot, and now I just feel empty inside….

Shimano have realised that the helmet is a good place to integrate tech. Think mind controlled gear shifting and heads up displays.
