Here is another one from southern California in the San Gabriel Mountains. This photo was submitted by star-gazing rocket scientist and mountain biker Dr. David Redding (sorry to out you David, but the work you guys do at JPL is excellent) who was out for a early ride to watch the morning clouds lift off the mountains “seen from the Arroyo Seco, just starting up the Ken Burton Memorial trail, the hard way”.

David wanted to give a shoutout and many thanks to the folks from CORBA, IMBA, Mt. Wilson Bicycling Association, and the US Forest Service for reopening such an awesome trail. Built in the 90s for all users by mountain bikers, the trail was damaged in 2009 by forest fire. But CORBA and MWBA volunteers set out last year to get it back ready to ride, and now it is open again!

We always love to see your photos and would like to show them to the world here on the Pic Of The Day. Send in your photo with a brief description here.

Wow Cory, thanks for the good words! And the trail is indeed very cool. Others are being worked on and will reopen soon, thanks to the excellent work of these organizations.

Hey David, how ‘back yard’ are these trails? Wouldn’t mind doing a post-doc at JPL….

Tyler, there are solid singletrack trails right out the door from JPL. One of the most popular trailhead in LA is right by JPL, yet still the trails are pretty quiet given the size of LA.

Memory is a funny thing. It has been about 20 years since I last rode Ken Burton and left the area. My recollection was that the trail went about 100 yards from the end of upper Brown Mountain and then switched back about 700 times before reaching the Gabrielino trail. The map shows how much I’ve forgotten (; I hope to get back one day to ride this, El Prieto, the descent from Red Box, and the incredible trails up to and beyond White City. Such amazing riding. I miss it.

Tyler, we roll right out the East Gate onto the Gabrielino Trail, from there many possibilities open up (including Ken Burton, Brown Mtn., El Prieto, Mt. Lowe, Sam Merrill, Mt. Wilson,…). You can even catch an early morning shuttle if you brought your DH bike. The roads aren’t bad either, Angeles Crest Highway, Big Tujunga, Angeles Forest, to name a few. Great place to work, great place to ride — come join us!
