Ready for your next adventure? Ready for the unpredictable weather? We feature a lot of cycling clothing on here that is just that – clothing made specifically for cycling. And as good as purpose built clothing can be, sometimes you’re better off with something multi purpose.

Rain jackets are a good example, especially if you find yourself drawn to the latest bikepacking trend. Having the right jacket to survive the elements is equally as important as packing light, so having something that pulls dual duty on and off the bike could be key. The new Showers Pass Syncline jacket probably won’t be the choice for performance cycling, but for anyone looking for a quality rain jacket in almost any situation, the Syncline is worth a look…

Available in both men’s and women’s cuts and in 2 colors each, the Syncline gets its name from what else? The Syncline Trail. The jacket uses a 2.5 layer construction with Artex hardshell fabric to keep out the elements, as well as fully taped seams. Venting is provided through their Cross Core vents which zip around the ribs and under each arm.

Built with 360 degree reflective hits with 3M Scotchlite fabric, the jacket has two front hand warmer pockets and an adjustable hood meant to fit under a helmet. Fit is considered “full” or relatively loose for hiking, camping, and walking, though an adjustable hem with pull cord will help keep things tight on the bike.

This style is available exclusively through REI and Showerspass.com for $125.

The ShowerPass Refuge is already a great all-around jacket. How is the Syncline different? Looks like its half the price. Where does the cost savings come from?

This new Syncline jacket uses 3-layer Artex fabric, which Showers Pass claims is 10,000g/m2/day breathable and 3,000-15,000mm waterproof fabric.
The Refuge uses 3-layer Elite fabric, which Showers Pass rates as a 15,000g/m2/day breathable and >15,000mm waterproof fabric.

I am guessing that the higher performance specs and a few trim points like reinforced shoulder patches are what the $150 difference gets you.

And I agree, the Refuge is a great commuter and mountain biking jacket. I love mine.
