BBinfinite ceramic bearing road derailleur pulley upgrade to reduce drivetrain drag

As we walk the pits at some of the largest races in the world, one of the most impressive things about the pro’s road bikes isn’t the new tech or next-model-year frames. It’s the complete and utter lack of friction or drag in their drivetrains. Sure, they have mechanics to clean and lube everything nightly, but at the heart of it all are a complete ensemble of premium rolling stock on anything that rotates.

Now, BBinfinite has two of the four covered…wheels and pedals being the exception. We’ve shown you and reviewed their one-piece bottom brackets, which ensure perfect alignment between left and right bearings to completely eliminate any binding. They’re amazing, and worth checking out as a first step. The second product are these new Delrin road derailleur pulley wheels, which pair the low friction composite material with CeramiTech hybrid ceramic bearings for what they claim is a noticeable gain in speed…

The first third of the video demonstrates how smooth they roll compared to stock Shimano Dura-Ace parts, the remainder covers installation procedure (but is somewhat entertaining if you have another couple minutes to kill).

The pulleys use a Delrin composite body, which glides more smoothly in and out of the chain’s links than alloy pulley wheels, and should cause less overall wear on the system, too. They’re available in seven colors and retail for $120. They’re drivetrain brand specific, with options for Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo available.

Nice…hoping for XX1 pulleys in the future!!!

If you could turn the pulleys as fast as the presenter spins them with his fingers you would be the galactic bicycle champion…but you don’t spin them any faster than your cranks go around. Save your money, there’s no benefit to high speed bearings in a low-rpm application.

Actually, all the research shows that your big gains come from pulleys and BBs. Upwards of 8-10 watts combined…best vs. good bearings. Great wheel bearing will only give you about 1 watt over good bearings.

ACTUALLY it doesn’t have much to do with the bearings of the pulley cage. It has to do with the size of the pulleys (chain movement from bending around smaller/larger pulley) and the spring tension of the pulleys (super pulley cages like Berner have a fraction of the tension normal RD’s have).

Actually, those big pulleys are barely faster than regular sized pulleys with good bearings. I’m talking a 1w loss instead of a 0.5w loss. There’s such little tension there and chains are already so efficient that it barely matters relative to simply having good ceramics and normal pulleys vs. crappy Dura-Ace pulleys. Actually SRAM Rival pulleys are far better than Dura-Ace

Pulleys spin faster because they are smaller, and never at the same rate as the crank. They are the fastest moving part on the bike, making more rotations than any other (assuming you’re almost always spinning), which is why such advantages can be gained there.

I hope they come out with gold versions to match my Eagle groupset…

A few years ago I ordered a BBinfinite from these guys and had an issue. The customer service was extraordinary. I have a CERVELO R5 which has one of there BB’s in it. What a difference – for the minor weight penalty it was so worth it. Everything is as advertised – so I am sure the pulleys will be just as good!

These guys are doing some really good product development. Great work!

Tacx ceramic pulley are below 1/5 of these in pricing & when used a little bit they spin also like the ones in the video. the difference is just, that the Tacx have some grease in them when new. I’m sure the BBinfinite do not have any grease.
you do the same at inliners for max speed: use open & dry ceramic bearings. for sure nothing for every day, but fast as long as they are clean ;-).

I could have a buddy CNC some delrin pulleys, install off the shelf ceramic bearings and still come out lower.

Come on guys, these are good. It allows me to tell my wife I am getting the budget option when I buy the Campy SR pulleys (granted a bushing on the top pulley, but I think that is to float – for noise?)

“…The second product are these new Delrin road derailleur pulley wheels, which pair the low friction composite material with CeramiTech hybrid ceramic bearings for what they claim is a noticeable gain in speed…”

Which speed are we talking about? Of the pulleys spun without any load or that of the whole system?
How much speed is a small fraction of a single watt worth?

lmao @ how much he tries to dumb things down. Even spending more air time explaining something as simple as how to torque bolts. It’s painfully obvious what kind of consumer base they’re trying to lure in.

On the one hand, totally unnecessary.

On the other hand, COLORS!

SRAM jockey wheels are already delrin and ceramically bearing’ed at the Red level.

That sort of marketing is unacceptable. Look at how he presses DA pulley when demonstrates how badly they spin. In his hands they don’t spin at all. This is not true.

Wow, that crankset at the beginning of the video spins almost as long as my Campagnolo Record square taper set up from year 2000…

These are just re-badged ceramic Tripeak pulleys sold at twice the normal retail price.
