We saw the Cycliq Fly12 front camera and headlight combo at Interbike, and it was impressive. Combining laudable recording times even when blazing the 400 lumen headlamp, it saves the footage in the event of an accident or other dangerous pranks from motorists. What sets it over the top, though, is the companion smartphone app, which lets you control its settings with ease.

Now, the Fly12 is shipping, and an Android version of the app is coming very soon. It connects to the app via WiFi and Bluetooth for both setup and video review and editing. It can even upload your ride to Strava, set the integrated bike alarm and let you share your video on social media. Check the press release after the break, and stay tuned for a giveaway on Bikerumor soon!

If the Fly12’s battery could be charged while riding AND charge other gadgets, that would push it over the top for me. Although the price is still hard to swallow, but as a charger, I would have a buffer between my Velogical dynamo and my smart phone, which is needed because every d*mn phone I have tried so far with hub dynamos and the velogical gets confused when the loading current starts and stops.

Much like the Fly6, I really want to like this, but it’s a case of “do one thing well or two things mediocre”. I was critical of the Fly6’s paltry 30 lumen output, and the same can be said here. 400 lumen is not enough for unlit roads. Also, because the camera and light are on the same axis, there is no ability to angle the light down (to avoid glaring motorists) while keeping the camera up (to record what’s up ahead).

Oooh, that’s a really good point. I was kind of skeptical of this because of the “do one thing” principle, but I couldn’t pin down the reason.

I dunno. It already does one thing really well (be a camera). Its not an action cam, nor does it claim to be, and its battery life is far and away the best I’ve seen. I personally don’t do a huge amount of after dark riding, and 400 lumens flashing is way plenty for daytime visibility.

The sense I get is that this is really more of a daytime running light. For that purpose, this is great. I agree that it doesn’t make for a good night riding light.

I’m excited about this guy. I have the FLY6 and I enjoy it. I (as well as my wife) like having an unblinking witness riding with me. I abide by rules of the road, but that doesn’t mean anything if I can’t speak for myself if there is a situation.

My neighborhood has a forum and I’ve been able to post videos of people driving stupid behind me…like trying to pass me while I’m stopped at a stop sign.

Great idea. Just a little bit expensive for now.

I wish they’d come out with a camera-only variant. I have the Fly6 and love it, but I rarely ride at night and would rather have stand alone lights when I do. The FLy12’s size makes it less attractive to me as a tool I could use on road rides.

Andrew, I race in the Pro 1/2, field and many racers no issues with having it on the bike to record races. It’s a great tool have to be able to review races and see what happened, or who was suffering behind you when you thought they were they were sitting comfortably.

The wide angle if the lens means that even with the light angled down to avoid dazzling motorists you still get a good video output. There’s no point having an incident camera if you discover afterwards that it’s been pointing in the wrong direction, so the lens is quite wide angle and no need to play about setting it up at all. Not fish bowl wide but rest assured it doesn’t miss anything.
I’ve had mine for a few weeks thanks to kickstarter.
