There is no doubt that more and more electronics are creeping into our everyday lives, and riding bikes doesn’t seem to be an exception. With more devices accompanying bikers on the road and trail, it seems we need more ways to safely manage their use. The new Terrano X wireless communication device aims to be one solution, linking cyclists by bluetooth to their mobile phones, but also going one step further and linking rider to rider.

The small helmet-mounted Terrano X device uses open ear speakers and omni-directional mic to deliver both communication and entertainment on the bike. That lets you hear audio from the device without blocking out the sounds of the environment around you. And the microphone has been specifically designed to be operated at speed without picking up excessive background wind noise.

While many wireless headsets and the like are designed for a mix of active sports, the Terrano X was developed just for cyclists, and focuses around what they claim is an unobtrusive helmet mount setup. The brains of the communicator attach to the top of the helmet in a small housing designed to take the abuse of day-to-day riding, but not substantially affect the aerodynamics or safety performance of the helmet itself. Its streamlined form and location on the top of the head give it improved range which lets it communicate to other Terrano X devices up to 1700ft/520m away.

This rider-to-rider communication is one of the hallmark features of the $150 device ($280 for a pair.) The intercom is designed to link either 3 riders on a conference style call, or up to four in a group for one-to-one talks. Bluetooth pairing to other mobile devices lets you use it as a typical hands free device to place and receive calls, get audio notifications, and stream stereo music while you ride.Voice activated control lets you benefit from its complete functionality without taking your hands off the bars.

The all-weather device claims easy setup and operation, plus 6 hours of talk-time and 1 week of standby on a single charge. More info on the devices are available at Terrano’s web site, and they can be purchased now through their Amazon web shop.

You know that phone/handsfree isn’t any better than driving drunk? You’re basically devoting a huge amount of brainpower to verbal processing and comprehension in order to talk with someone who has no idea of what the road conditions are like.

University of Utah did this kind of thing years ago. I’m surprised we haven’t banned all forms of telecoms while a vehicle is being driven.

I came here thinking “Oh, this looks like a rebranded Cardo BK-1” only to find Terrano has acquired Cardo…

I don’t like it. Looks like a giant cockroach sitting on top of your helmet.

So basically Dave’s problems are solved by Terrano x? Be like Dave? Or you are pretty much Dave if you need this thing?

I’ve got this – well, I’ve got the Cardo BK-1 – and love it to death. My wife has one too, and it is fantastic to ride all day and effortlessly chat. Stoked this company picked up the tech after Cardo stopped selling it – I can’t imagine touring without it!

I’ve been after something like this for use in multiple areas, not just cycling. I dont want a gangley device thats not useable outside of one particular use. Does anyone know of any models/brands they can point me to so i can get started? my searched just bring up headsets for computers and its frustrating as hell! This device is perfect if not for it being a dedicated helmet mounted device. 🙁

I lead group rides with cyclists of varied abilities and experience. This works well for communications between my sweep and me for our riders who have flats, miss turns or decide to try routes where we do not intend to go.

For some people, doing anything other than focusing on one thing at a time reduces their ability to do the primary task, sometimes significantly…and for others far less so. Depending on the situation (other traffic, weather and road conditions, etc.), having a conversation with a riding buddy can range from totally harmless to very dangerous. It’s not a black and white issue, as are most things.

I’ve used these devices with my wife for years and find that warning her of obstacles, cars, etc. (and she for me if she’s out front) under the conditions that we usually ride under far exceeds any perceived danger from the “huge amount of brainpower” lost otherwise. In fact, I’d say using these devices makes things more safe.

The study you mentioned probably doesn’t apply to cyclists and, if you were scientifically oriented, you’d instantly realize this.
