45NRTH teases new concave XL tire studs to conquer ice & snow

45NRTH XL Stud

Even though most of the ice and snow is gone from Minneapolis, it looks like 45NRTH is already preparing for next winter. With more riders taking to studded tires as their all purpose winter treads, the actual tire studs are getting a bit more attention. As a result, 45NRTH is teasing their new XL stud. Built with a cupped, concave tip the stud looks like it would offer insane levels of grip no matter what the surface. Specifically, 45NRTH claims there is 86% more grip edge than a standard stud.

Offering a further tease at things to come, 45NRTH says they will come standard on a brand new tire this fall. The studs will also be available this fall in packs of 25 or 100 for $15 or $40 and will fit all 45NRTH studdable tires and will use the same stud tool.

What happens when the cups fill up with ice or snow?

Nope.
Sure, under ideal conditions, this could work out. But as anyone who has had to deal with snow balling will tell you, once things get a little warm/wet/sticky, these little cups will pack up and end up being convex ice balls that will have no effect.
They would have been better off with an X shape.

I have never had the cups fill with ice or snow. But then I have only ridden about 6,000 winter miles in Anchorage and surrounding areas on two sets of Dillingers with the concave studs.

These cups are a bit larger Lars, but not so large they should pack with snow. My guess is about 3mm across. I look forward to trying them.

Leki has used similar metal tips on their trekking poles for 20+ years. It works. It means that no matter how the stud contacts the ground, it is always at a singular point. Pack with snow? Not a chance.

Erik, 86% comes from the actual measured increase in surface area that acts as the gripping edge compared to our existing concave stud. It’s as close as you can get to a percentage calculation of the increased grip edge.

Seems like 86% is too accurate of a number for me to to believe that it’s not made up.

Wouldn’t worry to much about packing snow anyway, that’s how winter car tyres work, by picking up snow, as nothing sticks to snow better than snow

My Grip Studs in a Bud are better than my studded D5s on hardpack and glare ice. The carbide tips on the Grip Studs are small sharp and bite the ice. The concave 45nrth studs just did not live up to the hype for me. These only look like they would wash out more than the current 45nrth studs. The only problem with the Grip Studs is that they rust and leave stains on the floor.

Yeah, drive these on a city cycle path and partially seen asphalt eats those edges away just in one winter…

Carbide is crazy strong, the rubber will most likely wear before the studs do. Car tires have carbide studs too, and they see lots of asphalt.
