Were your parents always telling you that playing video games was a waste of time? Well, here is proof that it actually can amount to something. Well, if you’re talking about Zwift. And if you’re really, really fast.

Zwift of course is the online training game which turns your efforts onto the trainer into a digital competition between you and other Zwift riders all over the world. In addition to keeping you fit and sane as you pedal your way through the winter, it also appears that Zwift could be your ticket to go pro…

If you think you have what it takes to go pro, you’ll need a bike, a compatible trainer, and the Zwift program set up in your den of suffering. Also, since the team picking one rider out of haystack is the Canyon//SRAM women’s team, the opportunity is only open to aspiring female cyclists. Starting in March, Zwift and Canyon//SRAM will put together a series of online challenges including group rides, individual tasks (power numbers, sprints?) and other training tests to seek out the perfect rider to go from online to on the road in the women’s pro peloton.

Supported by Rapha, Wahoo Fitness, Zipp, and Quarq, the rides will continue until the field has been narrowed down to 3 riders, who will compete head to head for the final spot on the 2017 roster. Seeing it as more of a hidden talent search that is open to riders across the globe rather than a marketing stunt, Canyon//SRAM hopes to find that rider who may never be spotted through the typical racing channels. The program officially launches today with a group ride on Zwift led by Tiffany Cromwell from the Santos Tour Down Under.

Hold on while I change my settings to female and weight to 50kg, and I’m ready to go.

It’s like The Last Starfighter, but for terrestrial bicycle riders…
