If you raced the NCCX finals over the past two years at The Biltmore Estate, some of the course set up in Asheville, NC, for the 2016 USA Cycling Cyclocross Nationals will look familiar. The brutally long straights on the pasture fields, the off camber curve around the stable, and the monster run up are all there. But, the total elevation change has reportedly tripled (to a whopping ~270 feet per lap), plus more aggressive descending, two flyovers and a barn storming pass through the stables!

On Twitter, Pro Adam Myerson called the 3.2km layout the “best nats course I’ve ever ridden. Maybe best US course ever, period. Worth whatever line you have to wait in.”

This video from Charlotte local Boyd Safrit (used with permission, thanks Boyd!) shows it at a casual recon pace, so grab a cuppa joe and see what Jeremy Powers and Katie Compton are in for as they battle it out to defend their national champion titles for the 4th and 12th time, respectively!

Can’t make it to Asheville? Watch live streaming of the U23 and pro men’s and women’s races on Sunday on Ultrasport.tv starting at 11:30am EST.

looks like a very American course to me: fast, hilly, and non-technical…at least compared to a Euro course. For spectating, I think the difficult, muddy Euro style courses are more fun to watch.

Thanks for posting! Great to see what the course looks like without the price of a plane ticket.

X,

what would you do differently, other than change the weather?

This course doesn’t even have a major sand area. I’d hardly call it a Euro course.

Just got home from the day – calling the course “non-technical” would be incorrect. Been racing CX for 15 years and have held a UCI Elite license. One of the best and most engaging I’ve ever ridden. Not saying I’m an expert, and have only raced in the U.S. but this course is the real deal! Nice work Asheville!

Agree, video never does justice. Came down expecting a lame power course based on prior vid, course is tough and already taken quite a few victims who won’t be racing this week any longer. Lots of vert each lap, lots of off camber, and 3 solid little drops that had quite a few people walking. If it rains even a little the course would be epic. Well done by the designers.

X, it’s a good thing it looks like an American course, seeing as it is in fact a course located in America. And on the non-technical aspect, I’m sure Adam Myerson would disagree, seeing as how he noted that, if a rider wants to hit something at speed, it can indeed be a dangerous, technical course. Europe has their fair share of dry, non-technical cross races as well.

nightfend, since when is a sandpit requisite for European racing? What is it with this awkward attempt to compare our cyclocross to that of Europe (specifically Belgium)? Can’t we just have our cross and celebrate it for what it is?
