It’s a different approach than the Bell 360Fly helmet/cam combo launched earlier today, but the effect is similar: 360 degrees of video capture in glorious 4K ultra hi def.

The new Nikon KeyMission 360 puts a spherical lens front and rear, capturing a very immersive set of video and still images that should open up more exciting uses for action sports cameras. Remember that killer video you shot with the camera angled just a bit too low? And remember how you kept tilting your head up as you watched the replay, trying desperately to see further down the trail? You can kiss those types of goofs goodbye with the Nikon offering, and that may be reason enough to see what the camera experts are bringing to the bike.

Other features include a rugged, shock- and water-proof housing with electronic vibration reduction applied during playback to smooth your video. More details are being announced at CES tomorrow (Wednesday, Jan 6th) on various models. For now, more pics, video sample and the press release can be seen in standard def below…

A large, easy to hit on/off button appears to be at the top of the unit, which should make operation very simple. A few settings and ports appear on the sides, along with a mic on one side (no stereo?). We’re looking forward to getting all the tech specs soon.

Why so wide!!!! I couldn’t finish watching the footage because I got so annoyed with the wide wrap around!

They’ve got a long way to go as far as picture quality is concerned. Quite surprising from a company who makes awesome cameras and lenses.

I’m curious how they’ve managed to cram two 4k data streams onto one storage card at the same time. Maybe they have two cards, and software combines the two videos into one on a PC.

Stereo mics surround the record button, on the side is the eyelet for a leash.

I agree it’s too wide. It would be a nice feature to have for some use cases (land speed cars at Bonneville salt flats?) but I would not want all my video to look like that. There must be a narrow mode for a more normal view on a trail ride.

Picture quality and fish eye effects aside, this is a cool idea.

I can ride rollercoasters all day long, but any handheld video, fisheye, shaken, or 1st person video makes me nauseous in mere seconds and it lasts for hours.

Great stuff. I’m curious what the final pricing will look like since the Ricoh Theta S is available already. Nikon is trying to catch up and all we have to do is wait for the next competitor(s).

I am thinking this would be great for Fishing.
I could get a Video of the fish swallowing the Camera.
