When were the first carbon bikes made? I, an industry lifer, would assume the early to mid 80’s at the soonest since carbon didn’t make it to mass production until the late 80’s to 90’s. Seeing this video made my jaw drop, though it made sense given the non-bike companies involved.

Check out the video above from Rumor pal Kevin Neidorf for a history lesson, then click past the break to see Jonathan Maunsell ripping the new Kona Percept 200 in Switzerland and Speedvagen’s rider highlight on racer and real person, Laura Winberry….

Video c. of  Kona Bikes

Jonathan Maunsell rips the Precept 200 in the incredibly picturesque setting of the Crans-Montana bike park in Switzerland.

Video c. of Speedvagen & The Vanila Workshop

A meaningful video profile on Speedvagen’s Laura Winberry, where racing is her passion, but not her entire life. Laura is always looking for a creative outlet to express herself, and riding for Speedvagen is just one aspect of that.

Sound design on the Kona video is all wrong. Its actually pretty annoying to listen to!

Speedwagon video was ok. Super girly but in a good way.

Bike collection video was awesome! One of the best videos I’ve seen in long time!

The Carbon bike video was pretty cool though, carbons come a long way!
And the Wineburry video was cool too…… I so lust after one of those bikes!

Thing is that to me on the Kona video there was utterly nothing that required 200mm travel?
1 mediocre jump and the rest was damn nearly XC territory!

I believe that ASSOS is actually credited with the first carbon bike. Built in 1976!

Here is a Popular Science mag from April 1974 about the Mossberg X-1000 and carbon fiber going into the sporting world.

Interesting that the earliest carbon fiber bikes were made by defense contractors and weapons manufacturers. The most successful analogue firm to do that was Spain’s Orbea, which first produced bikes in the 1930s. Most of the company’s 170-year history revolved around weapons and firearms manufacture as well.
