hands on with all new Polar M450 gps cycling computer

When they introduced the budget GPS M450 cycling computer this summer, plans were to have Strava integration up and running by October. Well, that date came and went, but looks like compatibility with everyone’s favorite device agnostic performance measuring service is finally here for it and several other Polar GPS computers and watches.

Available today for the M450 and V650 computers and M400 and V800 watches, you’ll need to update the devices through Polar Flow to make it work. Then, after a ride (run, whatever) has been uploaded to Flow, you can set it to automatically send that data to Strava, too. You can even send past workouts to Strava using Flow’s export function. Of course, unless you’ve ponied up for a premium sub, you’ll still see more data about your ride in Flow, and you can even let your coach peep in on your progress, too.

Too little too late, 3rd party integration was promised 2 years ago when the original loop was released. Poor customer service and unfulfilled promises led to me giving this brand the boot from my stores. Hardware is only ok, software is horrible.

Having automated data uploads to Strava will help to make that data available to those many services that Polar doesn’t have integration with, via third parties like Tapiriik.

But when you look at what Garmin is doing now with the Strava “live segments” downloads directly to the 520, etc. and it shows just how far behind the curve Polar is.

Yes to all but Polar’s HRM software etc. is still regarded as some of the most accurate on the market.

Even if they are 1% more accurate on HRM data, who cares other than people that have cardiac reasons for watching that data. Garmin has closed the gap up on HRM data and owns the GPS market.

Using your excuse for polar only means they need to stop making all products other than the FT4. There is no reason for them to keep putting products to market that are years behind what consumers are wanting.

I’d say Polar is doing pretty much everything right with the new M450 and the M400 that has been around for a while. From my pov these are the best products in their price classes. Also, the V800 was the first activity tracking high-end training computer.
First months of Loop and V650 were a fail but those seem to have been fixed with sw updates. This has happened with many products from other brands too, Polar isn’t alone there.
I’ve been a happy V800 owner since launch, even with the initial bugs that were fixed.

I’d say this is winning Garmin any day, does pretty much the same and for a much lower price! The ones commenting on live segments: please compare the prices!!! Jeez.
