Midfat bike kid just wants to fit in and make new friends. After being shunned, he doesn’t let Strava Steve & Spandy Andy get him down and has the ride of his life.

Also check past the break of a couple of oddballs at Rays, an inspirational, legally blind photographer, and a blast from the recent past of the Road World Champ absolutely killing it!

When the Odd Couple get together, you know they’re not going to do anything the same….. even at Rays MTB Park.

Legally blind photographer Bruce Hall takes a different look at what most people may not see and captures it through the lens for the rest of us to see. Pretty inspirational story of someone finding a unique path to bring us a different perspective.

One of our favorite videos that is worth watching again is of this year’s Road World Champ Peter Sagan ripping on a mountain bike. Before he was the most flamboyant roadie of this generation, his ride of choice was a mountain bike, and it doesn’t look like he’s lost his touch.

Strava Steve should give it a whirl, I’m faster *uphill* too on 29+…

Damn! Not sure who the kid is in that midfat video, but sponsors should be sending him all sorts of free stuff!!

The notion that plus wheels might actually be superior and not just marketing makes me sad. But then again, so did 29ers 10 or 12 years ago. 🙂

I switched to 2.5/2.4 on my 29 Enduro and never looked back! Sure they added a tab bit of weight. My old tires were race thin if you ask me, the new Maxxis tires have a little more meat to them for sure. Not sure if I can go 2.6 or 2.7 with my front and rear clearance, but heck I would give it a try it it works. I am not planning on getting a Midfat or a Fatty anytime soon as I don’t have the budget for another bike at the moment, so I experiment with what I have. My biggest issue with my current 28h wheels that came from Specialized are that I blow spokes too often like every two or three rides. I need to upgrade to a custom wider 32h carbon wheelset to make them bullet proof.

New Tires:
Maxxis Minion DHF EXO Dual Compound Folding Tire, 29-Inch x 2.5-Inch on the front.
Maxxis Ardent Dual Compound EXO Folding Tire, 29-Inch x 2.4-Inch on the rear.

All I can say is I don’t notice them much going uphill except for a bit more traction the rear, doesn’t seem any harder. But riding hard on tight fast downhill single track with lots berms and jumps was a big change in traction and confidence. It’s like i just stepped up my game. I ride hard and fast no matter what, I definitely feel less floating during high speed downhill and more precise flow/grip. I blast through rock gardens even faster now too. I didn’t think I could take some of my local trails much faster!

My old tires were:
FRONT TIRE Specialized Butcher , 60TPI, folding bead, 29×2.3″
REAR TIRE Specialized Slaughter , 60TPI, folding bead, 29×2.3″

I will definitely demo one of those MidFat’s the next time I have an opportunity to compare it to my bike.

Another video.

Another video showing how cool it is to skid up trail.

No matter what the wheel size.
