45nrth wolvhammer winter cycling boot redesign(13)

Riding a bike in the winter is fun. Riding in the winter with warm feet is even better. As one of the big players in winter cycling footwear, 45NRTH made a name for themselves with their original Wölvhammer winter boot. Like so many things, as fat biking and winter riding has evolved so have the Wölvhammer boots. The latest version takes advantage of an entirely new upper to make the boots more comfortable and durable for harsh winter climates…

Receiving a complete upgrade to the upper, the Wölvhammer has gotten rid of the zipper and has moved to a single layer boot construction. The change is said to allow for a wider range of fit while retaining the warmth of the original.

In place of the zipper, the Wölvhammer moves to a gusseted tongue with a drawstring closure and Velcro cuff. The boot still uses a full grain leather and ballistic nylon shell with a waterproof membrane to keep things dry and warm from 0°F to 25°F. There is also a dedicated hook on the toe for gaitors like the 45NRTH Bergaven.

The Wölvhammer Will be sold in one model with an SPD compatible Vibram sole and a plug to use with platform pedals. Sold in size 38 to 50 (no 49), Wölvhammers Will be available in late September for $325.

Cool gear like this legitimately makes me wish I lived somewhere with snow.

I may have to get a pair of these for my winter commutes. Last year I used their Xerxes studded snow tires to great effect.

The day I had to strap on those boots is the day I would move to a different climate.

@JG: I have a pair of these that I’ve used for 2 winters now. I cannot recommend these enough! Super great and have held up to great abuse and regular commuting.

what about their implementation of aero gel in these? It was mentioned that it was in the insoles? and that those insoles will also be sold separately?

I want a pair super bad. But every time I have tried to get a pair they run in such strange sizing that it was either way to tight or way to loose

The zipper wasn’t a problem on the old wolvhammers, and it held together a rather impressive shield of weather stopping materials over top of the cinched lace.

Always choose the larger fit over the tight one. You need a bit of space in the boot in order to stay as toasty as possible.

I picked up a pair of these about halfway through the Minnesota winter last year after getting fed up with cold toes halfway through my commute. I wore them down to about -20 with windchill by adding an extra liner sock and they worked great. Normal cold weather down to about 0 just required a regular wool sock.

I can’t stress enough just how awesome these boots are for cold weather riding. I just got a fat bike for this winter and am excited to use them with that.

The updated version looks much more futuristic.

Sorry to resurrect and old comment thread: Boom, do they keep the rain out fairly well?

two questions:
1. I echo JG… Anyone ride with thes in the pouring rain? Yea I know, RAIN in the 20s???
2. Anyone ride in these in the low 30s and get the dreaded feet sweats?? Boom… that’s where the rain qt originated from … 😎

Thankos to all!

This new wolvhammer sucks. Not as warm as last year’s. If you want the same warmth as last year’s wolvhammer you have to pay more for this new wolfgar. Did 45NRTH use QBPs CRM tools for this shamelessly obvious upsell marketing scheme?

This company has lost my business for good. Crappy gators, mediocre gloves, a mediocre one size fits most headwear line, and poorly designed fashion over function cold weather footwear.

About the rain…
They do hold up for a short period of time in heavy rain (like 5 miles before seeping through, and 8 for being totally soaked). These are my winter commuter boots for MN, but this winter it has been more rainy than snowy, so I found out the hard way. THEY ARE NOT as warm as I had hoped they would be. A friend and I went for a 2+ hour ride on a 18 degree night with some gusty winds at times and… by the end of riding together, my toes were fairly cold. By the time I made it home, which made it a little over a 3 hour night for me, I couldn’t feel my toes. For colder temps/gusty winds and people who suffer more from cold toes etc, you MUST double up on the socks or buy the Wolfgars (which I haven’t used, yet). I use wool socks, which help, but aren’t resolving anything. FYI, I never had the change to take out the original Wolvhammers, but I heard from a fellow that they were like toasters, even in the teens.

So here’s my story of 45Nrth’s foot wear. I commute year round in Madison Wi, 20+ miles everyday, I sold my car to force myself to ride no matter what the weather. As cold weather started approaching in November, I thought I had better start gearing up, I knew 45nrth was the “winter biking” name, so I ordered a pair of the Fasterkatts. They were fairly warm & fairly waterproof, but I had lace problems with them as well as “zippers getting stuck” issues. I talked with Jeremy at 45nrth, & after a few back & forth emails, he suggested I return the Fasterkatts & I could get a new pair of the Japanthers. They are the coolest looking, but most uncomfortable bike boots I’ve ever worn. I seriously only wore them on 2 commutes and decided I couldn’t wear them any longer. They left deep red divots in my ankle bones. Hurt like hell. Well, I sold them on Craigslist & used the money towards a pair of the Wolvhammers. They are sooooo comfortable. I loved them right up until they leaked rain into the toes going home one night. I called Jeremy at 45nrth again, & he said take them into Eriks, our loacal dealer, & exchange them. Well, I did exchange them & I also went up a size because my toes were getting pretty cold in the leaky pair. Since then I’ve been nothing short of ecstatic about these boots. They are sooooo comfortable & easy to put on & take off. My feet have been dry & warm, although, in single digit temps & below, my toes start to get cold after about 35-40 minutes, My commute’s about 50 minutes, so they’re workable. I would definitely recommend these, as well as the 45nrth company. Jeremy, in particular, was just a super guy with all the patience & understanding he had. I do, however, think I may be looking at the Wolfgar’s next year for the -15 & below temps like we’ve had a few times this winter.
