Yeti Highlights SB6C Redesign with Limited 30th Anniversary Build

Yeti Cycles is turning 30. To celebrate, the company is rolling out an extremely limited run of SB6c mountain bikes in special anniversary colors. The release is also the perfect time to highlight the fact that the SB6C has received a few updates for 2016. While the updates will continue on for their standard versions, the Anniversary Edition will be limited to just 250 bikes so if they’re not gone already, you had better act quick…

Among the changes to the new frame you’ll find a new Front triangle with internal cable routing plus Boost 148 spacing in the rear. To dress up the new bike for the anniversary celebration, the frame and fork get matching turquoise and yellow paint with anniversary graphics and a few turquoise anodized pieces of hardware.

The 250 Anniversary bikes will be sold in five different sizes with the retail price of $9,000. Even with a price tag just shy of $10k, don’t expect these to last very long.

Waiting to see who complains about price/boost/pressfit bottom bracket. Wait this isn’t pinkbike!

I think they did a good job on the design, but I think the original yellow and teal colors were the best.

I’m not usually one to scoff at prices of bikes, but the fact they are charging $9K and providing X0-level components and standard-width metal rims is pretty absurd. Pretty colors apparently command pretty prices.

@jake, price out that kit at let us know how much cheaper you could build it. Keep in mind SRP on the frame is $3500 and they’ve sold all they made at that price.

Apples to oranges comparison notwithstanding in lieu of building the SB6c, the YT Capra Pro Race is similarly spec’d yet costs over $3,000 less at $5,495 (closer to $6,000 factoring in taxes & shipping costs). Pus most bike sites rate the Capra slightly higher than the Yeti in comparison tests.

Applying your logic, the standard SB6c X01 retails at $7,000; that puts the pretty color premium closer to $2,000 (the anniversary model has nearly identical specs albeit a couple parts priced a tad more)…

If I owned a highly successful boutique bike company, would I charge an extra 2K for merely putting thirty-year old colors on an already existing frame if I thought it would sell? Absolutely!
If I were a millionaire, would I pay the 2K premium? Absolutely not.
Boost- good. Press-fit- bad. High prices- bad for the moment, but hopefully some of that money goes into creating new tech which will trickle down to other levels of bikes.

Another thing that sucks: internally routed cables. Pure form over substance. Cliche that’s all too true: externally routed cables will come back in several years and be touted as the latest in convenience and accessibility.

i rode an SB6 this weekend
demo from a local shop
the external cable routing was horrible
rubbing the crap out of the the headtube cable junction
all cables under the front shock pivot were worn thin from getting dirt trapped in the trough (trapped there by the cables)

internal = better … in this case

plus … with hydraulic and electronic … you almost never need to change …

I don’t even like this frame and yet the colours would make me want to buy it, if I could afford it.

I bet they will sell all of these bikes no problem.

As for me I will keep riding my 1988 FRO.

@Mike N No, the 429 Trail has them as well. That bike has been at Pivot demo days and a few have been sold through dealers I believe.

Did they upgrade the rear triangle so it won’t crack ?

Oh yeah, that was only from the proverbial “flawed initial prototype run”.

No personal experience, just from the Bike magazine review where they cracked 2 of them.

They said in the clip it wasnt a manufacturing problem but they crashed the bikes into some rocks, and the impact the rear triangles…

@DeafDaddy, did you compare a large YT with a small SB6C? 🙂

YT spec is great for the money, but it’s not the same spec on this bike=failed comparison.

@i,
To reiterate, I’m not usually one to harp on expensive bikes. An SB5 is high on my list of next mountain bikes. I was just struck by the $9K SRP vs something like a X01-specced Nomad selling for $6600.

I know this is primarily a matter of real value vs. perceived value, and in this case, this consumer doesn’t perceive the additional value.

Description says Fox 36 but on the pics it looks a lot like a 34 (weird choice by the way).
As for the horrible original cable routing, then they should have improved it instead of swapping for internal. There’s nothing worse than that if you need to swap brakes last minute. OK, off my list Yeti.

Absolute stunner, but I’m shocked at no comments on Yeti’s wheel size choice for their premium priced 30th Anniversary Edition.

Am I the only one who thinks that Yeti seriously missed the mark due to not offering a 29er (a/k/a SBc4.5) or in the very least a 27.5 (a/k/a SBc5)? (or a 27+ even)? : /

@ Eric.NM It is a 27.5er, I’m not sure what you point is. I’d love an SB4.5 with this color but whatever, Yeti has always been more about the gravity side of things.

And don’t most carbon bikes have internal routing these days? You must not have a very long list.

Beauty is in the eye, but I’m with you. I find this thing hideous. I don’t like yeti’s yellow/teal scheme and this version is worse. There all te frames aren’t bad but I never really liked their top tube lines on their newer models
