Announced in March, the Powertap P1 power meter pedals are available for pre-order as of today, June 12, 2015. The offer is only open to U.S. based customers at first, and only sold direct through Powertap.com. The company says this arrangement lets them maintain close communication with early adopters to ensure everyone’s getting the best performance out of this new product.

The Pedals allow for an easy addition of power to any road bike, just mount ’em up and off you go. They communicate via Bluetooth LE (aka Smart, 4.0) and ANT+, show left/right power individually and run for about 60 hours off AAA batteries. Full details are here and hands on photos from Taipei Cycle Show are here. Retail is $1,199.99 and the first units start shipping June 22, first come, first served.

“The company says this arrangement lets them maintain close communication with early adopters to ensure everyone’s getting the best performance out of this new product.”

Perhaps I’m being too cynical about this, but boy that sounds like, “We don’t think this is going to be right the first time, so we want to be able to track who we sent screwed up product.”

Yeah, sounds like paid beta testers.

I guess it’s good that they “nearly” admit that there will be issues as is usually the case when you ramp up to real sales despite any/all testing that came during the design phase.

Garmin should have done this. When customers are unhappy, you can pay them to not say anything to their friends. This isn’t so easy when you have to bring the junk to a bike shop for a warranty

For the weight weenies, someone should really offer a 1.5V battery adapter. Smaller rechargeable litium ion in a plastic shell maybe?

They just look so clunky! they remind of the first version of Look pedals….. I wish they would have modules add ons so one could pick their own pedals. and a power meter for cranks that have a direct mount system. that would of been more forward thinking then this. but i suppose PowerTap did it this way for a reason.

@myke: if that was possible, it would already exist. As far as I understand, crank power meters cannot be add-on systems (at least at the current stage of technology). They need to be machine into the arm in order to pick up exact deflection. Same story with pedals, hubs, crank spiders, and now chainring options. There’s no such thing as an “add on” that upgrades your current gear.

Actually there is such a thing as an “add on” power meter for your current crank, and that the thing is the PowerTap C1 chain ring set. It’s an add on so long as you have the right BCD on your cranks.

@G spot on! @psi squared G qualifies his assertion with ‘exact deflection’.

@RICO – try finding a 2032 battery in Europe. Can be problematic.
