Brompton Black Edition folding bike

Whether you prefer to call it ‘muted’ or ‘murdered out’ there’s something about a solid black bike that gives it a classy, composed aesthetic which seems to look equally impressive on road, MTB or even folding commuter bikes.

The UK’s Brompton is known for their folding bicycles that offer a high level of customization, typically including lots of choices for color combinations. Inspired by urban night riding (though not necessarily the best color for riding at night), Brompton has released a limited run of Black Edition bikes with special matte black componentry for those who like it simple and stealthy.

Like all Bromptons the Black Edition bikes are designed and hand made in their London factory to exacting specifications and standards. The bikes feature full-sized frames with rear suspension, fabricated from steel due to its strength and stiffness. Despite their steel frames they are reasonably light, with various models weighing between 20-28lbs. With lots of cargo racks and options, you can get up to about 30lbs but a trim build could easily come in under 24 lbs. There is an option to add a titanium fork and rear triangle, which costs a bundle extra but shaves over a pound and a half of weight.

Brompton says the 16” wheels give their bikes quick acceleration and excellent agility for crowded city driving, and helps them fold quickly and easily into a compact, portable package. The bike locks itself together when folded, and hides the chain and gears in the middle to prevent you from greasing up your clothes while carrying it around. Other nice features for commuters include puncture-resistant tires, plus lots of options for fenders, cargo bags or racks, and even lights.

Only 5000 of the Brompton Black Edition bikes will be made. Several key components will come in matte black including the seat post, handlebar steer tube, fork, fenders and cranks. Interestingly, there are a few options for the frame color- You can have black of course, or choose from White, Berry Crush, Lime green and Lagoon blue.

The Black Edition comes with the option of a two or six speed drivetrain, and you can customize the fit by choosing either a flat (S), upright (M) or more upright (H) style handlebar.

Depending on how you accessorize, the price starts at $1458 USD. The Black Edition is available at select US dealers, and if you’re interested don’t delay- Brompton has had inquiries from all over the globe since the bike’s release and once they’re sold out, they fade to black…

The Brompton runs on a 16″ wheel not a 20″.

Yep, 16″ wheels. I’ve already got a murdered out folder, but would have got something more colourful if that was an option for the model I wanted. Way too much black in bikes these days.

An honest question: Does 5,000 qualify as a “limited edition?” If that number is correct, and even considering Brompton’s worldwide distribution, is sounds more like an option to me. But then I have no idea how many bikes Brompton sells in a month or year…

@Der_kruscher Brompton will build around 65,000 bikes this year for worldwide consumption. They are saying limited edition because production of the black series is limited to 5,000 bikes and there isn’t a plan to do this year after year, so it technically is a limited edition or could be considered limited option. The cool part about these bikes is that Brompton isn’t charging a premium at all for these configurations; they are just doing something different and giving some customers a chance at a unique configuration.
