Kinomap ITP inside the peloton extended recording time action sports camera

Kinomap is known for their user-generated, real world riding videos and integrating those into your home trainer, letting you ride virtually through thousands of different locations around the world by replaying those videos on your iOS device. The level of integration takes on various forms depending on your equipment, but they’ve done a tremendous job of making it accessible to virtually anyone. And lots of people have jumped on it, recording almost 60 million kilometers of footage.

One of the limitations, though, has been the short recording time offered by today’s popular action sports cams like Sony, GoPro, Garmin, etc. The solution? Make the camera last longer. Kimono’s Phillipe Moity explains:

We thought for a long time about having a bike cam able to record long rides. Our new camera is able to record up to 7 hours in one go when all competitors die after 2 hours of HD recording. First recordings have been officially made by next week at the Sea Otter Classic. We made several tests already, including at the last Haute Route race, also during the Roc D’Azur Mountain bike race in France (4h20min recording in one go) then one UCI world tour team made some trials as well during a training session in Calpe Spain (5h36min and 162 km distance).

Here’s how it works…

The ITPcam (Inside The Peloton Camera) is made to last through a 5-6 hour pro race or stage without battery swaps. The camera has about a 90 minute battery, and the external battery boosts total recoding time to 7 hours.

Similar to when using a non-GPS camera from another brand, it pulls the ride’s GPS data from a GPS-equipped smartphone or cycling computer that’s recording the ride simultaneously. All of the pairing is handled by Kinomap’s upload system.

It shoots in 1080p 60fps with a 160º wide angle view. Launch price will be $219, then go to $249 standard retail. Each hour of recording uses about 4GB, and it’ll ship with a 64GB memory card…which makes that price very competitive. It’s available through Motiongears.com with free shipping in the US.

Cool although a double edge sword because seven hours of pro race footage will be good for TV coverage, but seven hours of your neighbor’s ride is worthy of hara-kiri.

The idea is to start the record before the race and forget it. Nobody will watch the full 7 hours but you can pick up the most interesting parts or locations. who knows what your neighbor does along his bike ride!

It’s a Mobius camera with an external USB battery pack. You can get that on ebay for less money.

The GoPro Hero 3 and 3+ versions already have a more elegant extended battery solution with third party brands like Wasabi (5 hours) and Brunton (8 hours).

Now if GoPro can start incorporating Ant+ and GPS connectivity and go back to the old battery design to be able to use extended batteries, there would be no need to buy any other brand.

Yep, that’s what it looks like. A Mobius (~$80) camera with an external battery pack ($20). I have a Mobius. It’s great.

HAHAHA EXACTLY what Scott had pointed out. It’s a mobius camera with external battery. Freaking amazon “mobius” for the camera for 79.00 and get the external battery for 29.00 more. Save yourself more than 120-150 bucks.

Remember what Mr Carlin said, ‘nail two things together that have never been before and some schmuck will buy it from you’ (paraphrased). There isn’t even a software component included with this.

eletoponline365 is an official reseller of Mobius and his eBay store has these for $68.99 w/free shipping.
Samsung EVO 64GB MicroSD (likely better than the included 64GB card) is $29.99 @ BestBuy on sale now.
External battery with the same form factor as the above under $5.00 from Amazon.

Saving over $120 PRICELESS!

You’re right on your comments. This is based on a Mobius cam. We like this camera a lot. good quality and so light weight. No intention to hide anything here as the kit we provide can be done by yourself. No issue. The idea was really to make a plug and play bundle, all in one, including bike mount systems for the camera itself on the handle bar and then for the power bank, a water resistant case for the camera, 64GB memory. the initial set up is done which can be really challenging on Mobius, to let users having just to power it to start recording. Last comment is on the power bank : most of the time, you have to power it when you start : if you do so with the Mobius, you do not get benefit of the internal battery anymore. With the power bank we provide, it will deliver power automatically, once the internal battery is over. The first 2 hours are given by the internal battery, the external power bank giving an extra 5 hours on top.

Last but important comment on the Mobius we use : this is a shielded version of the camera as we experienced some bad wireless interference disturbing the GPS signal when being nearby a Garmin Edge, both set on the handlebar.

Quick list of what is provided in the ITP pack : Camera (with Wide Angle), Shielded Housing, “Pro” Mounting system (“V” Bar Mount), Weather Cover, 64Gb Kingston memory card, 2600 Power Bank and Mount, Dual Port USB Car Charger, Mounting/cabling items, Support & Service
and Free shipping.

No added value to justify the big increase in retail pricing, no additional software, nothing extra, just ships in one box.
