Salsa Cycles Introduces Latest Titanium Vaya XO Any Road Bike

Salsa-Vaya-Ti-2016-1

For 2016, Salsa adds a new flagship to their Vaya Line – The Vaya Ti. This isn’t the first time the Vaya has come in the Ti flavor, but the latest edition combines Salsa’s extensive gravel, road, and dirt experience into a new all-road package. Featuring the known riding qualities of titanium and a roomy 47mm for tires sans fenders, this is a bike that can explore any road, anywhere. The Vaya Ti is ideal as a light touring machine, optimized for fit with Salsa drop bars, ensuring stable handling with a light load. Available in six sizes from 49.5cm to 59cm, there is a Vaya Ti for everyone!

The frame is constructed from custom spec’d 3/2.5 triple-butted tubing, with custom Salsa designed investment cast dropouts. Derailleur housing is full length, and routed externally for ease of maintenance. Brake housing continues this trend. Crankset versatility comes in the form of 1x (46T max), 2x (53/39 max) and triple cranksets.

The Vaya’s carbon fork steerer is tapered from 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 mates to the frame’s EC44 head tube. Out front a 15mm thru-axle and hidden fender mounts complete the fork package. Rack and fender options on the frame are integrated into the dropouts in back.

The Vaya’s build kit features a mix of SRAM XO and SRAM X9 components, Hed Belgium Plus rimmed wheels with braking handled by the venerable Avid BB7, in a special all black Salsa edition.

While previous Vaya frames used 26″ wheels for the smallest sizing, the current generation uses 700c wheels across the board. MSRP for complete bike is $US 4,299, frameset is $US 2,499.

Their is a metallic beauty in Ti and it’s corrosion resistance. It’s naked metal invulnerable to the elements. Painting Ti is like putting a suit on a bear.

If you’re gonna dress a bear….take a tip from Yogi and go with a simple hat and bow tie.
Bears don’t need pants….and ti don’t need paint

Rear 135/QRs on a new disc brake bike? What was Salsa thinking?

Where is the 142x12mm rear thru axle design from the new Warbirds? Or at the very least, why not reuse the proven design of the convertible Alternator dropouts from the stainless steel Vaya Travel, etc.?

Must’ve been something in the water in Bloomington the day they drew up the design for this bike.

So this bike can not not do a compact?, I like running a 34-46 for my CX bike that can do a Monster CX duties with a 40mm tire, this bike is what I was looking for, thinking that if Ritchey ever does a Ti Break-away disc bike like this that would be the one, cause I could take it on trips.

Dig the external routing. Wonder if the bottom bracket is threaded, too. That would make my day. BUT- that is a lot of spacers on the steerer, and painting ti is wasteful and not pretty.

Gotta say, I have no problem with painted ti. Had my ti fat chance painted black. Looked awesome.

@Darren, I’m pretty sure they meant 46t is the max for an inner ring. if it can handle a standard, it can handle a compact.

I’ll go so far as to say I prefer painted ti, with just some hints and teases here and there. Show a little skin—err, ti.

Why not slightly modify the paint scheme to leave all the areas with the greatest chance of rock strikes bare Ti and paint the rest? Very handsome bike as-is though.

@Tim: Yes, standard threaded 68mm BSA BB. Salsas typically ship with long steering tubes and spacers, your shop can cut it down to whatever height you prefer.

I can’t stand painted titanium bikes. They should have left this bike naked and used the alternator dropouts. I can’t imagine buying a QR frame ever again.

I love unpainted Ti(have my own Ti bike) but this bike looks great but it won’t stay that way. Paint on Ti just doesn’t stay well. It chips extremely easily. Far easier than paint on aluminum, steel and carbon…a primer does little good. Painted Ti bikes should come with a disclaimer…EVERYTHING that touches your frame will scratch the paint off of it.

@Veganpotter Agree with you if it’s classic wet paint on Ti, but powder-coating creates a durable coating even on Ti. Salsa has some experience with that, and it shows on the Warbird Ti and Colossal Ti which have come painted in 2012 to 2014. Their paint job is quite tough. I think the new Vaya Ti will also come powder-coated.

I have a bare naked Eriksen and love it. Had a Lynskey painted jet black w polished stays, loved it.

What I don’t understand is why have rims that have a braking track if I read that right. On a disc brake bike? Did I miss something?

I like the bike, paint and all. The Warbird is the one though, really like that bike.

That there’s f-all point having a thru-axle on the back of a chunky road bike? Even for the compatibility-paranoid there’s not a decent 12mm axle hub out there that can’t convert to QR.

There also no “f-all point” having a quick release on the back. Between the two, thru-axle is better for anyone not racing.

Who wants to convert a hub to QR? The worst possible choice for any bike.

Oh boy, this is not going to be good for my marriage. LOVE my 2013 Vaya 2, but must admit that if there are 2 things I’d change, I’d want a titanium frame and a 44mm head tube for carbon fork options. And here it is with super nice components and wheels!

If I were to be picky, I’d prefer an option with no paint (because this is a bike to love and polish for a long time) and a rear through axle (because everything else on the bike is so up to today’s standards). I have to admit though that the black looks sharp and they did leave the chainstays and seatstays naked, which is where you get a lot of scratches in the paint.

I didn’t even know that SRAM made a 48/32 version of the X9 crankset. The Apex shifters seem a little low end on a bike at this price, but they do work well on my 2013 Vaya 2. I do love how all the SRAM 10 speed road and MTB components are compatible, but I wonder if they could have gone with an 11 speed option. Maybe something like Force CX1 (now Force 1), though that might not fit the adventure identity of the bike.

A lot of their choices don’t make sense to me. Why no mounts of any kind on the front fork? This bike is a perfect candidate for a Firestarter-esque road fork. See the Trek 720. Why Apex on a $4000+ bike? 11-speed is here to stay, guys. I thought it was bad enough that when I bought the Vaya travel they put old 10-speed ultegra on it.

with internal cable routing… Internal junctions re Calfee bar stem…plenty of gearing options for everyone…. hey ,it’s only money …. ti the best material for this type of bicycle
