5 Points is a collection of artsy types out of Kansas City that pops up around the community to share art and help folks get creative. For NAHBS, they cut an entire bike out of wood to showcase their made-from-trees handlebars and rear pegs, along with a few other accessories and non-bike goodies.

Go with the grain and see other random components and more below…

The bike parts came about in collaboration with the Kansas City Bicycle Collective and Velo+ Bike Shop.

The grips and pegs are made from Maple. They also make the chalkboard plate inside the main triangle. Judging from their website, these were limited editions for the show and not regular items.

They also had some pedals and other items on their blog.

Townie Syndicate, which we featured when their Kickstarter campaign went live, was next door. Their campaign succeeded and they had the clever, minimal tire-lever-and-tool combo on sale.

Martindale Cycling Components was showing off their handbuilt wheels using a mix of 100% carbon and carbon/alloy rims. Bill (left) and Philip Martindale combine decades of experience in aerodynamics and the bike industry, respectively, into stock and custom wheels.

The rims are chosen from preferred (read: high quality) suppliers in Asia, then laced up to either PowerTap or White Industries hubs with Sapim CX Ray spokes. The carbon/alloy and carbon clinchers have been tested in the wind tunnel to verify their aerodynamics.

There’s also a carbon tubular and, on the left, a tubeless-ready carbon clincher with versions for road/cyclocross and 29er mountain bikes. Check them out at MC2bikes.com.

Other than the wooden stuff at the top, what is “handmade” or “North American” about these products? The last guy’s website isn’t even in English!

Yeah…maybe the cranks are machined and the guy puts the blanks in to the machine by hand.

***I think the N.American means the show is in N. America. At least I think that’s the case now. Still tons of cool stuff but the show has gotten so big and the American way is all about growth, even if that means there is little attachment to the original plan. Its become a bike convention/expo for almost anything bike related. Basically, a mini-Interbike where handmade bikes are featured but not the sole feature. I for one, am all about local. Not so much pro-American. If you live in the UK, try to buy UK made bikes and whatever components you can for their handmade show. In the US? You should have US made hubs, rims etc to get in to this show. These aren’t $1500 bikes. There’s no reason those carbon wheels should be featured. Otherwise EVERY wheelset any local bike shop builds(in store) is worthy off being in this show, no matter the origin of the hubs, rims, and spokes

Blahhh… I love NAHBS ….love innovation….but still buy from China. My daily salary dictates where my money goes unfortunately.
