WoodyBicycles2015-1

Woody Cycles of Cape May, New Jersey, is a small wood working company specializing in the manufacture of hand crafted, wooden bicycles. The idea to found Woody Bicycles came to Max Samuelsen during an evening in 2009, while indulging in a few adult beverages with friends. Looking to relieve boredom associated with his woodworking projects, he asked his friends for some ideas. The rest as they say, is history…

Woody’s range of bikes range from cruisers to road bikes, including the company’s latest creation, a TT / triathlon bike, the bike displayed at this year’s NAHBS show. The bike’s frame material is Red Oak with laminated construction – in layman’s terms, the frame is comprised of many pieces, expoxied / glued together, some of which are bent to shape by molding in a vacuum bag.

The lamination process adds strength to the frame, by eliminating grain lines in the wood, a potential point of weakness. The frame is completely hollow, with cables run internally. Max’s wooden frames differ from the norm, in that they are sometimes hybrid in nature, depending on the needs of the customer. In the example of the Woody NAHBS bike, the chainstays are aluminum.

Each Woody Bicycle features standard fittings for bottom bracket inserts, head tubes, etc, to ensure compatibility with current and future component groups. Thank you to Woody Bicycles for use of their photos.

That’s really beautiful and elegant. Love it.

I won’t believe they’re from Cape May until I see a wooden 4-person surrey, though.

Why the h e double toothpicks does bike rumor continue to post articles for manufacturers that haven’t updated their website to include the product featured in the article!?!?!

Golly. Why do bike site report on Interbike or Eurobike when so many of the companies haven’t updated their websites? Golly, why do many magazines and blogs report on new products that aren’t shown on the company websites. Why? Because the readers are interested in such things.

Some companies are really good at making things other than websites. They see web traffic as being more valuable when routed by some source (this site for instance).

I used to do website overhauls for small companies. The general response from many was “Yeah, we know we need to update the site, but we’re too busy making our products…”

I don’t really like the practice either, but… fairly common.

Anyway. Cool bikes! I like them.

I’ll be looking for about 3 cords of those frames next autumn.
