To many, the new Salsa Anything Cage HD probably doesn’t look like much, but to a seasoned bikepacker, it looks like options. Options to carry just about anything on your journey from small stuff sacks to Nalgene bottles and more. While the original Anything cage was a favorite among adventure cyclists, when it came to the new design Salsa wanted to make something that was more durable and even more versatile.

Passing on the traditional metal construction of the original, the Anything HD opts for injection-molded impact resistant nylon. After several designs were tried out through 3D printing, the final design emerged from the mist…

Mounting to the same Three-Pack boss pattern found on Salsa forks, the Anything Cage HD is capable of supporting up to 6.6 lbs of cargo. Two included nylon webbing straps are used to secure the contents like the original, but the new design offers more anchor points for the straps making it easier to fit a wide range of objects. To gain more insight into the design of the HD, check out the Salsa Blog which has a great interview with Salsa Product Design Engineer Sean Mailen and P&A Product Manager Andy Palmer.

Even with the stout design, the injection-molded material results in a weight of 149g without hardware. Sold for $35.00, the Anything Cage HD includes two mounting straps and all hardware and is available now in limited quantities, with better availability through QBP in late January.

Fans of the original will be happy to hear the Anything Cage will still be sold through QBP as well.

Hmm, seems like a nice clean way to carry a tube & co2 for a non-bikepacker as well.

‘Course, I imagine there’s something even lower profile & more enclosed for that, that I haven’t seen yet.

Looks pretty cool and a great way to strap some Fix It Sticks to the ride (yes, I’m the fix it sticks guy so loads of bias in that statement). Simple ideas are always fun to see executed.

Are the holes on the same spacing as regular cage mounts? That would let you use it on more bikes, although it would of course be a bit less stable.

Micah, the holes are evenly spaced to match up with standard bottle cage mounts. You can mount with the middle-and-upper or the middle-and-lower. I do this on my Surly LHT downtube to mount a 64oz bottle.

That is pretty cool. We are working on a new product that will blow this out of the water and change the game….hold tight for details that we will submit to Bike Rumor.

@grohunter, a waterbottle cage and a Specialized Keg are great for carrying little things like you mentioned.

I like the idea, however their old cage, which is made if aluminum, obviously welded and then painted is available for $30 including straps. How is injected molded nylon, I’m gonna guess and say $0.30 worth of material and two nylon straps comparable in manufacturing costs to warrant the same price? Don’t even say mold production costs.

@charliegoodvibes – you must be an economist. I agree with what you’re saying, but the cost of materials and labor is only one, arguably less significant factor in figuring out an MSRP. The most significant factors are “What do similar products sell for?” and “Will people pay it?” If you get the right answers to those questions, who cares what material costs are?

Wow … seriously, charliegoodvibes, you’ve paid $30 for an aluminum cage?

charliegoodvibes: Mold production costs. Also, risk of investment and as ABW said, market value. Seriously, I bet that mold would cost around 20K to make considering it is “impact resistant” which I’m assuming has additives/reinforcement such as fiberglass, which must use harder and more expensive steel to make. Up front cost. Then include shipping and labor and packaging and printing and don’t forget to give a little margin to the LBS (sure- Salsa will make more selling direct, but if they undercut the LBS by 20% then it would be hard to stock them).

But let’s play a numbers game. Let’s say delivered cost to a shop is $5 bucks. So if they’re making $30 off of each unit sold, they still have to sell about 650 of them just to brake even. And that’s not taking into consideration the opportunity cost of other things that could have been done with that 20K. And this is in a niche market. If it were a larger market, they would have more of a guarantee to sell more of them, and could lower the price. I’ve totally made up the numbers, but just wanted to show that there could be much more of it than the $.05 of material that went into it.

One last note: the bike industry hardly where large profits are made (relative to, say, the medical industry where you can really hide costs and up charge customers), so I’ve made the decision to give companies the benefit of the doubt when it comes to things like this…

Er… my condolences to those looking for entertaining bikerumor soundbites! I entered into essay territory…
