Looking like most industrial design concept projects, the Dubike concept actually has a greater chance of reaching reality. It is commissioned by Baidu, an internet service company in China that is often compared to Google, both in service and in their investment in new technology.

The Dubike is a fully connected bike, but is not motorized like so many of the concepts out there. It is said to have a generating system to use kinetic energy to power the onboard programs, as well as recharge the rider’s devices. The design of the bike and the system is a partnership with the Tsinghua University Design department.

It is also fully integrated with sensors, so that the on board apps can become fitness trackers, power meters, bike computer, navigation, security and anything else they can program into the operating system. They are already launching the OS to the public to begin the creation of crowd-sourced apps. Jump past the break to see a video about the Dubike.

There have been no details on the bike yet such as price or availability, although we guess it is being developed for the very fast growing Chinese market, and will most likely not see the US shores.

Now that’s what you call an Ebike. (deleted), we ride bicycles because we want to pedal. If its got a motor its a motorcycle…the description is in the name…not hard to understand.

Can we please all agree that these concept bikes need to stop being a thing?

This looks like a bike designed for basketball players. It’s huge, esp for the average Chinese. I like the idea of this bike. But… It’s got a few design flaws, most of all stand over clearance and storage space/racks. I imagine some kind of huge down tube with batteries and connectivity ports would make more sense. Rear suspension would help reduce vibrations that are sure to kill the electronics.

Tell ’em Bruce: Don’t concentrate on the finger or you will loose the heavenly glory!

The thing is this, a bike that powers all the on board devices is a great idea. As a first design, it’s not a looker, but you can imagine if the tech becomes smaller and the bike starts to look more ordinary, then that will be something. And not some proprietary software but open and available so moders can get their hands dirty. What’s not to like?
