It may seem like it was only yesterday, but it has been a year since GoPro introduced the Hero 3. Not one to sit back and relax, GoPro is at it again with a new camera that is smaller, lighter, and packs a punch with improved features. The new 3+housing is 20% smaller than the 3, yet it manages 30% better battery life which when combined with a new lens and better programming, means that Hero 3 you just bought may look a little less awesome right about now.

The good news is that if you have  a Hero 3, you already have one of the better cameras on the market, but if you want the latest, check it out after the break.

The latest GoPro ad video is stunning as usual, and reminds us that our action camera footage will never come close to being that good. Partly because we’re not professional video editors, and partly because we’re not friends with any lions.

The Hero 3+ comes in a Black and Silver edition and replaces the previous top 2 tiers from GoPro. Side by side, the difference in size is pretty apparent.

The HERO3+ Black Edition The Most Advanced GoPro Camera Yet.

  • Innovative new housing yields a 20% smaller and lighter overall package when camera is installed in housing (waterproof to 40m)
  • 30% longer battery life
  • 4x faster Wi-Fi for quicker transfer and playback of photos and videos from your HERO3+ camera to your mobile device when using the GoPro App
  • SuperView is a new video mode that captures the world’s most immersive wide-angle perspective
  • Auto Low Light mode intelligently adjusts frame rate for varying lighting conditions
  • A new lens for sharper video and improved image quality

The HERO3+ Black Edition camera has a suggested retail price of $399.99.

The HERO3+ Silver Edition – 2x More Powerful.

  • 2x faster image processor than the HERO3: Silver Edition
  • Enables 1080p60 and 720p120 fps video
  • Innovative new housing yields a 15% smaller and lighter overall package when camera is installed in housing (waterproof to 40m)
  • 4x faster Wi-Fi for quicker transfer and playback of photos and videos from your HERO3+ camera to your mobile device when using the GoPro App

The HERO3+ Silver Edition camera has a suggested retail price of $299.99.

To go along with the new cameras, GoPro also introduced a few new mounts like the Jaws Flex Clamp above.

  • Jaws: Flex Clamp – A quick way to clamp your GoPro camera to a variety of objects. Use the optional opposable neck to achieve a wide range of camera positioning and adjustability. Jaws securely grips irregular shapes and super slim objects thanks to its innovative design.
  • Junior Chesty (Chest Harness) – A smaller version of our adult-sized Chest Harness. Perfect for kids ages 3+, the Junior Chest Harness is great for capturing immersive footage of a child’s world from their perspective—from skiing and skateboarding to slides and swings.
  • Headstrap + QuickClip – The QuickClip is a new accessory that now comes bundled with GoPro’s Headstrap. The QuickClip enables ultra-compact, low-profile mounting to baseball hats, belts and other objects ranging in thickness from 3mm to 10mm.

While it may not produce quality like that shown above, GoPro has updated their GoPro Studio to 2.0, which is a free download on GoPro.com.

Studio 2.0

  • Simple to use storyboard-based video editing software for Windows or Mac
  • Manually create a video with transitions, titles, and soundtrack, or
  • Use GoPro Edit Templates to quickly create professional-looking videos based upon edits originally produced by GoPro’s acclaimed production team

So instead of fixing the existing Hero 3 problems they just rolled out a new model? sweet, does this one crash every 10 min instead of 5?….don’t be a sucker, wait a few months before purchasing the 3+

Sony action cam is better.

love the video in thread, but man i hate most of the videos people post from their personal ones that have no editing. All the guys who post videos of the view from their bars touring and slow trail riding are wholly uninteresting to me.

I wonder when all the cam-consumers are going to realize that wobbly POV footage of a weekend warrior shredding the groomers in Vail is not interesting and that for most people a Go pro is simply a waste of money.

Uh oh. Gringo got dropped by a weekend warrior kitted out with multiple go pros and his Stava k.o.m time got smashed.

The new Go Pro Hero 4 is coming out soon, i think its better to wait for it instead of buying the new Go Pro Hero 3+ Here are the specs and first images of the Hero 4 http://www.amongtech.com/new-gopro-hero-4-can-record-4k-1080p-120-fps/

I can tell you from personal experience that catching that 15 seconds of your buddy eating dirt all over your local run is completely worth the $ and the hours of useless footage.

As a consumer, the speed at which new models come out leaves me unable to make a purchase…much like trying to catch a moving train. I want to get on, but you’re going too fast.

Beating your buddies in a race is fantastic, catching it on film is priceless….

I got a Hero 3 black edition and it locks up regularly requiring the battery to be removed. Think you got that session of your superbike track day recorded? Nope. Think you nailed that cool recording of the run through the mountainbike slopestyle course? Think again. It’s frozen.

Pretty bummed that the Hero 3 was a turd and instead of a fix, they just released a new one. Kind of screws all of us stuck with a 3.

I just watched some footage of me riding a trail 2 years ago. What a difference 2 years and a new bike makes. Can’t believe how reckless I was back then, on a frame with a history of failing. Saw some footage of guys at work riding the bike park and it made me wish I could’ve joined them that weekend.

Ascar and Steve; and your phone will like to be mounted in the mast top of your windsurfingboard or on your mtb/motorbike? Guys, your smart phones will be great as party cameras and for shooting your egopics for facebook and instagram. Any action camera on the market would be better…

From what I see, there has been some nice improvements without a price increase. The extended battery life is foremost, followed by the white balance upgrade. It’s nice to see some vendors (ie: HumbleOutdoors) are still offering free bundle upgrades.

Do you guys think the gopro 4 will come out this year?

I’m going to have to agree with David. I would wait a couple moths before purchasing the new 3+. I had so many issues with my 3 it was crazy. I’m on my second one and it still has it’s moments. S, the GoPro Hero 4 will most likely come out in the middle of 2014. Cheers

I disagree. The 3+ is well worth the money, hasn’t crashed on me once through offroading, skiing, hiking, longboarding, and more. It is extremely easy to control all the camera settings through your phone and, for most video settings, view ~1 second delayed – live footage through the app on your phone. It has been my experience that if you manage the battery usage by turning the camera off while not recording you have no problem filling over 30 GB of cards with one battery pack. Enjoy all the footage after the day is done to save the battery of your camera during the day and try to take awesome footage.
